The Raiders have done everything in their power to spend in free agency. After failed attempts to land marquee free agents Randall Cobb and Ndamukong Suh, general manager Reggie McKenzie somewhat unexpectedly made a run at DeMarco Murray – and apparently he was serious.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Raiders’ offer included “substantially” more guaranteed money than the $21 million guaranteed by the Eagles.
Whether it’s ownership, California tax rates, or uncertainty around the future of the organization to blame (probably a combination of all), the Raiders have once again failed to lure top free agents to Oakland. Of course, the silver lining is that “winning” in free agency rarely translates to winning on the field, but for a fan base that has suffered for more than a decade, it might be nice to win at something.
For what it’s worth, owner Mark Davis told reporters yesterday, the Raiders “aren’t done yet” in free agency. According to Spotrac.com, Oakland has just under $21 million in remaining cap room – good for six-most in the league. Only Cleveland, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, and Green Bay have more.
