It’s no secret that Brock Bowers will be the featured pass catcher in the Raiders’ offense this year, but according to Derek Carr, the third-year tight end is in line for something potentially unprecedented at the position.
On his podcast this week with his brother, Derek talked about his experience with Klint Kubiak in New Orleans and said he believes Bowers will be the no. 1 option in Kubiak’s offense on nearly every pass play.
“I’ve talked a lot about Bowers being used like JSN,” Carr said on the Home Grown with David & Derek Carr podcast.
“To me what does that look like? To me, when we get our plays, you get the playbook and you get your gameplan, there’s little 1’s, 2’s and 3’s written on these guys’ heads. And it’s who’s first in the read, second in the read, third in the read, and there’s some much more that goes into that, this is just the simple way of saying it.”
“Now schematically, [Andrew] Janocko and Klint are trying to figure out the best way for 1, 2 and 3 to be open… now, what does that look like? Bowers, I would assume, in 90 percent of these plays is no. 1, and if he’s not 1 and he’s 2 or 3, that’s just trying to save the system or the scheme of ‘Where’s Brock? His eyes are starting there.'”
Last week, David Carr said Bowers was the player he was most excited to see in Kubiak’s offense, and on Sunday said Bowers could get upwards of 15 targets a game this year.
“This was my experience at the one practice I went to. It very much looks that way, where Brock is at least no. 2, because they’re looking that direction a lot,” David Carr said of the practice he watched.
“Like you said, they do such a good job because people are like ‘Oh, well they’re going to know.’ They knew where JSN was in Seattle every snap. He still had 15 targets a game. so that’s exactly how I see Bowers being used.”
‘JT the Brick’ thinks Bowers will be one of the greatest Raiders ever to play
Last month, Raider Nation Radio host ‘JT the Brick’ said Bowers has been practicing like a Hall of Famer, and the third-year tight end is like no one he has ever seen.
“I’ve seen a lot of great football players in my life. I grew up with Lawrence Taylor. I followed Reggie White, Joe Montana, John Elway. I swear on my kids, Brock Bowers is going to be one of the greatest football players to ever live. This guy practices like it’s the week of the Super Bowl. Today, he was running routes, he’s catching balls. He can catch anything with one hand,” JT said on his flagship radio show in August.
“When he catches the ball in front of you, he catches the ball and the vision that he has to get up field is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Someone described it to me today like it was Raymond Chester in his prime, or even better than Dave Casper, who turned out to be a Hall of Famer.”
