Who’s to blame for the Raiders’ catastrophic failure on offense this year?
Geno Smith has taken a lot of blame in recent weeks, but it was clear on Thursday night that former Raiders’ O-lineman Richie Incognito looks at the coaching staff in Las Vegas as the biggest issue with the Raiders’ offense right now.
Another former player shared his thoughts on Friday, and 11-year NFL veteran Logan Ryan says the Raiders’ offensive mess has the telltale signs of a failed coaching staff.
“When nobody is balling, that’s got to be on the coaches,” Ryan said on CBS Sports HQ.
“The quarterback is not playing well, the running back is not playing well, the offensive player of the year tight end is not having the numbers he had, your top wide receiver wants to get out of there,” Ryan continued. “That tells me it’s on the coaching because it’s not looking good at any level… when I see teams where everyone is going or no one is going, that’s when it falls on the coaches to me.”
“I’m not in that locker room. I don’t have enough information to say for sure, but from my experience as a player, the way the Raiders is looking right now offensively, that’s got to fall on the coaching.”
The players deserve blame for Thursday’s 10-7 loss, too, but there has been enough evidence over the first half of the season to believe Chip Kelly probably isn’t going to be the latest “guru” to end the offensive nightmare in Las Vegas that has extended through four different head coaches.
After seeing how well the defense played on the same night the offense was awful, head coach Pete Carroll maybe deserves a pass.
But Kelly’s days in Las Vegas are numbered if he doesn’t turn the offense around in the final eight games of the season.
Aside from overseeing a failed offense, there have been too many storylines around Kelly’s group this year that never needed to happen.
Why was Ashton Jeanty asked to change his stance?
Why was Jackson Powers-Johnson in the doghouse for the last two months when he was clearly the best offensive lineman on the roster before getting injured on Thursday night?
Why was a player like Jakobi Meyers not valued more and why was Brock Bowers only targeted three times against the Broncos?
And most importantly… why have the Raiders scored the third fewest points per game (15.4 PPG) in the NFL this season?

No one talking about the fact that Carlson missed another one?
That’s a week comment! Yeah Carlson has not been good, but the offensive line is horrendous. Geno SUCKS! Chip Kelly needs his walking papers
I don’t see how you can scapegoat the OC without damning the Head Coach, too, though. I don’t think we know who made the push to hire Chip, if it was Pete or Tom Brady, or whomever. But Carroll isn’t calling plays on either side of the ball, so if he is going to be an executive HC, he needs to exert more control. And is it Kelly’s call that Cappa and Forsythe are playing over younger options? Is the Tyler Lockett signing and the decision to take snaps away from Jack Bech a Chip call or Pete’s? Was the disastrous decision to trade for Geno and stick with him a Chip decision?
Geno Smith was a big mistake again they have gone with an old washed up quarterback I’m sick of this ! Chip Kelly needs to go! Draft a young quarterback! And get a offensive coordinator that knows the NF L
And why was Geno playing hurt ! Put Kenny Picket in and see what he has ! Stupid decision by Coach your letting the offense down when he doesn’t play well pull his but out ! I really don’t get it ! Some thing needs to change! Fast ! It’s not right for the players ! Let’s go
They gave a young QB in Cam Miller. Bring him up from the practice squad
Idiot fans scapegoating Chip. Hilarious. Pete “Joe Biden” Carroll is senile and way past his expiration date.
Hiring your son to be Offensive line coach? Check. Offensive line is an absolute disaster? Check. Make Geno Smith your starter? Check. Divide the locker room between “your guys” and everyone else? Check.
Bring in old, washed up dogs like Tyler Lockett? Check.
Stick with sad, washed up Geno despite being the worst starter in the league? Check.
This id all Pete Joe Biden Carroll. Not Chip Kelly.
Chip is running his Ohio state offense in the NFL, ridiculous!. I agree with everything else though. Signing Lockett was a head scratcher for sure, but that is directly tied to Carroll, just like Geno. Dumpster Fire!
What’s the one consistent element over the last 40 years ( 8 playoff appearances ) ??????
Anyone, anyone ? Ownership. Enough said.
