Zay Jones only caught two passes on Monday night, but it was his 31-yard overtime strike that sealed the Raiders 33-27 overtime win.
Derek Carr has always been complimentary of Jones, but his praise for the 26 year-old wide receiver has never greater than in was on Monday night.
“Beautiful think about that [last play] is there an audible that coach told me during the week ‘hey if we ever get this look, get ready for this play,’ and Zay Jones was it,” Carr said on the ESPN post game broadcast.
“Since he got to our team every time I ask him to throw, he’s there at 6 AM. Every time. He never missed one. So to see him come up with the game winner like that… I hope everyone in the world roots for Zay Jones because he works harder than anybody on our team.”
Jones was considered by some to be a long shot to make the Raiders’ roster, but by the end of preseason it was clear that Jones was ahead of John Brown (who ultimately asked for his release) and Willie Snead on the depth chart.
Most importantly, Carr seems to have a handful of trusted targets this year – even with the loss of Nelson Agholor in the offseason. Jones had the game-winning score, but Bryan Edwards and Henry Ruggs were also factors in the second half of Monday night’s game.
Next week the Raiders travel to Pittsburgh to face a Steelers defense that held the Bills offense to just 16 points in week one.
