Did Tom Brady cost the Raiders the opportunity to make Ben Johnson the team’s next head coach?
If he did, it would be hard to blame Brady considering Johnson probably would never have interviewed with the Raiders if Brady had not been in the mix in the first place.
But something fell apart between Johnson and the Raiders in the last few days and Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter might have offered a clue on Monday morning to why it happened.
“I think now it’s just a matter of, can Brady convince Ben Johnson of his guy Spytek, or do they need to go with Ben Johnson’s person?” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.
With Johnson officially expected to join the Bears, it sounds like the one scenario with the potential to stall negotiations between Johnson and the Raiders actually played out. There will be firm reports in the days ahead, but it sure looks like Johnson’s decision to not take the Raiders job had everything to do with a disagreement on the GM situation.
Just a guess, but Johnson probably wasn’t interested in joining the Raiders in a situation where Brady’s close friend was in the general manager’s chair. That’s not a report but considering the alignment Johnson was said to be looking for, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he and Brady came to a stalemate on the GM situation.
Firm answers are coming but based on the way things played out over the last few days, that’s the immediate reaction that makes the most sense.
In the end, ESPN’s Adam Schefter was right. Even with Brady in the mix, the Raiders couldn’t bring in the head coach they wanted.
x: @raidersbeat
The Bears have a QB. End of story. End of Ben Johnson being the next coach.
So much for Brady helping the team land a sought after HC candidate. Pure speculation by the “insiders”! The Raiders are not an appealing job for sought-after candidates. They’ll need to get lucky in finding a HC that can uplift this team from the doldrums it finds itself in.
Screw schefter, the s.o.b is as hypocrite as they come.
Well it looks like Brady has suffered his first loss as a partial owner. Ex players turning owner has now claimed its first defeat?! What’s Davis going to do when Brady fails to bring in all his so called guys. We just found out that Brady makes no difference at all like he thought he did. Pete Carroll is on speed dial. Better give him or McCarthy a call now.
This played out like I imagined, Johnson taking the better QB and probably better overall roster. It’s okay, that makes sense, I only wish our Raiders radio network would not blow smoke up the Raider Nation’s backside. Last year they were convincing us that we were going to trade up for a QB, hopefully Jayden Daniels, and bring in a top offensive mind. In reality, we had a GM with a history of sitting on his hands and holding on to his picks. Then lost the good OC because he wanted a 3 year deal, not the 2 year deal the Raiders offered. This year “money will not be an obstacle in getting the people we want.” So says the Raiders PR broadcast partners.
I hope this caveat of Brady insisting on his GM candidate because of his relationship with him is not a sign of days ahead. That isn’t opening up the interviewing process, taking in a wide spectrum of experienced football minds, and selecting the best one for the Raiders. It’s getting your buddies hooked up at your new gig, and working with your friends. Remember the whole personal trainer issue in New England. Isn’t that guy working for the Raiders?
This can still be a good hire for the Raiders, Johnson is not a sure thing, and we may be better served by an experienced NFL head coach. I’m still optimistic!
Agreed
And so, it begins Brady screwing up the Raiders.
Maybe the raiders should stick with old school and locate best possible G.M. and put their heads together and find a coach owners AND G.M.agree upon and when they identify a strong candidate assure the guy he’ll have full support from the top brass.
I agree why are we finding a head coach first. Wouldn’t they want to have a GM in place to help Head Coach hiring
Johnson hasn’t won **** , he called an awful game against the Redskins. He may be overated,,, bad news bears 😂
Screw Ben Johnson probably do horrible in Chicago anyways go after Pete Carroll or Mike McCarthy somebody that has a proven track record go from there. If not, then I guess we’ll have to start all over again.
