Geno Smith didn’t receive the warmest of welcomes in Seattle on Thursday night and an incident involving a fan, Smith and Maxx Crosby could cost the players some money.
Smith was heckled prior to the game by a fan with a sign reading ‘BIGGER BUST – GENO OR JAMARCUS RUSSELL?’ and several videos caught Smith and Crosby each making an obscene gesture to the fan as they ran onto the field before the game.
According to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, Crosby and Smith could face punishment from the league for the incident as there is precedent for fines in these types of situations in the past.
“A Raiders team spokesperson declined to comment,” Reed reported on Friday. “It’s unclear whether the NFL is looking into the matter as the league did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A similar obscene gesture last season from the Detroit Lions’ Brian Branch resulted in a fine of $10,128.
An even clearer image of Smith “recognizing” the taunting fan(s) was captured by a Getty Images photographer on the field.
Raiders head coach Pete Carroll was behind incident when it happened (below), but the Super Bowl head coach received a little warmer welcome from fans than Smith, who had a 28-24 record in 52 starts with the team from 2020 – 2024.

You would think that these two team “leaders” would show some class and not respond to these hecklers in such a way. I do believe that Smith got into a similar altercation during a peewee game this offseason. Do your talking on the field!
