GPS System Clocked Henry Ruggs III at Speed Faster Than Anything Ever Recorded by NFL’s Next Gen Stats

Just how fast is new Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III?

We know about his 4.27 combine speed, but not every “fast” player at the combine showed it off in pads during the season. Ruggs, however, did show his speed at the University of Alabama on this 75-yard swing pass against New Mexico State on September 7, 2019.

By now you’ve probably seen it…

Ruggs apparently hit 23 MPH on the play above, but it wasn’t the fastest he has ever been clocked in a game.

Believe it or not, Ruggs was actually clocked at 23.27 MPH during his sophomore year on a play that was called back because of a penalty. That speed was recorded by the University of Alabama’s Catapult technology – a GPS system used by the university to measure “player workload, acceleration, deceleration, directional changes and explosive movements.”

For what it’s worth, the fastest NFL player ever recorded by NextGen Stats was Tyreek Hill at 23.24 MPH in 2016. NFL defenders (along with the legal system) haven’t been able to catch up with Hill since he entered the league, but the Raiders might finally have the one NFL player who can run with him on the field.

Now Jon Gruden has the enviable task of finding ways to get the ball in his hands.
