Insider Gives Underwhelming Update on Raiders Former First-Round Pick

Tyree Wilson is entering his second NFL season and to this point in his career he hasn’t shown a lot of promise considering he was the seventh-overall pick a year ago.

Wilson has been quiet in two Raiders preseason games this year despite Pro Football Focus crediting him with 48 defensive snaps.

There have been reports that he hasn’t shown a lot of improvement in training camp, and a column this week brought up the idea of the Raiders trading him.

“Despite his struggles and current spot on the depth chart, teams may still see Wilson as a raw but promising edge-rusher with upside worth taking a chance on,” Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler wrote this week. “Trading him now could allow the Raiders to acquire proven talent or additional draft capital, which could be used to address other pressing needs, such as offensive line depth or secondary help.”

Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter talked about the trade idea this week and said a team source told him the Raiders are not trying to trade Wilson. He also reiterated that the Raiders would listen to trade offers for just about anyone on the roster other than Maxx Crosby. Presumably, Kolton Miller and a few others would be difficult to pry away, as well.

A day after his trade conversation, Hondo acknowledged on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast that Wilson was a little underwhelming in training camp.

“For a second-year guy, I would in no way declare that I was disappointed in him. Did I hope to see more? I did,” Hondo said.

“Early in camp… didn’t see as much,” Hondo continued. “Then you saw a little. Then his production has gone down. I thought he got better in the middle. He kind of hit a hump at the middle, and then kind of has gone down a little bit.”

While it’s possible that the Raiders would consider shopping Wilson, it’s hard to imagine his trade market would be particularly robust.

There’s another highly unlikely scenario for Wilson and the Raiders, and even though the chances are slim the Raiders would cut a first-round pick before his second season, it’s not a great sign that it’s become a talking point…

  1. Raiders are cursed on their first round picks … I can’t think of a team that has had less success with them over the last 25 years ? What are they 5/25 in that time now ?? Their best was probably Mack , but they traded him and he sacked AOC Six! Times last year. Their worst The Purple Drank , arguably the biggest draft bust ever. But hey they got a SeaBass at 17 in 2000 😉

    1. No, I don’t think the Raiders were cursed with 1st rounders its’ just that some of these

Jamarcus wasn’t close to the worst 1st round QB taken not close. He isn’t even the worst in the Raiders’ history or AFC West history much less NFL history. Here are other guys who didn’t have a great time in the NFL and Jamarcus had a tough time and did some silly stuff but he wasn’t as bad or much worse than some of these other guys:

      Akili Smith, Oregon U.- Bengals

      Todd Marinovich, USC- Raiders(AFC West)

Heath Shuler, Tennessee U.,- Washington(also AFC West with Raiders)

      Andrea Ware,Houston U.,- Lions

      Mark Malone, ASU- Steelers

Johnny Manzel, Texas A&M- Browns, CFL

David Klingler, Houston U.,- Bengals(AFC West with Raiders)

Todd Blackledge, Penn State- K.C.(AFC West)

P.J. Losman, Bills(AFC West with Raiders)

Matt Leinart, USC- Cardinals(AFC West with Raiders)

  2. Your right….we need to slide back in the first round…collect bunch of 2nd and 3rd rounders…maybe it might pan out better…darn I can judge talent better than those bozos in the front office

    Raider for life

  3. The Raiders history of 1st round busts is staggering that why it was so refreshing to see Telesco take Bowers at 13, what an incredible steal for a top 5 talent whether or not we took MM last year with a 2nd round pick
I guarantee Telesco doesn’t take Wilson last year in the 1st round and I don’t see him lasting too much longer if he doest elevate his play immediately
On a good note, the positive reports and play from this year’s draft class have been encouraging about the future with Telesco, imo, the rosters were never the problem for the Chargers, their coach was
I’m excited and believe in the values that this football team is being built with for this Raiders era
