Insider Says Veteran Not Named Davante Adams Has Been Raiders “Best Offensive Player” in Training Camp

It’s only the first week of August and the Raiders are still in Costa Mesa, California for training camp, but there are already a few players making strong impressions on the coaching staff.

Jakobi Meyers has apparently been one of those players.

Meyers was by no means buried on the Raiders depth chart, but according to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, he has been the best wide receiver on the roster during training camp.

“I’ll tell you a guy who is playing unbelievably well is Jakobi [Meyers],” Hondo said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.

“Granted, Davante [Adams] hasn’t been here in a couple days, but he was outplaying Davante,” Hondo continued. “The best offensive player on this Raider team right now is Jakobi Meyers and it isn’t even close. He’s the best… I’m just telling you [he] is playing out of his mind. Everything getting thrown his way is getting caught, he’s making plays in all of the ways they are creating.”

It’s a strong statement to put Meyers in the same category as Adams, but it’s no secret that he has been one of the hardest working players on the roster since he was signed by the Raiders prior to the 2023 season. Meyers has been consistent over the course of his five-year NFL career, but he hasn’t had a breakout year and his 866 receiving yards with the Patriots in 2021 is still his career high.

Looking ahead, Meyers is in the second year of a three-year deal with the Raiders and is still only 27 years old. He’ll turn 28 during the season and is slated to hit free agency after the 2025 season.

If Meyers can play at a level anywhere near Adams, the Raiders should have one of the best wide receiver groups in the NFL this season. The question would then be… do the Raiders have a quarterback on the roster that will allow them to perform like one of the best wide receiver groups in the NFL?
