Insider Shares One of Raiders Top Priorities in Head Coaching Search

The Raiders are in the market for a new head coach, and there’s a good chance the candidate they decide on isn’t going to be someone lacking experience.

An NFL Network report on Wednesday said Tom Brady believes the Raiders need a coach with “expertise and stature” running the operation, and there’s a chance those benchmarks could rule out a few popular candidates.

Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter talked about the Vegas coaching search on Wednesday and he believes experience is going to be a big factor in who the team chooses.

“I believe what the Raiders are doing is I believe that their goal is… they want an experienced head coach who’s going to come in and grip this franchise and take it somewhere,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.

“You may have no doubt that’s exactly what they want. I have zero doubt. That’s not speculative,” Hondo continued. “They know what they want. That’s why I think they’re going to end up with an experienced head coach.”

On Wednesday, a coach that might have the experience and expertise Carpenter was talking about was added to the list of candidates on the Raiders list.

Steve Spagnuolo is one of the most respected defensive coaches in the NFL and the Raiders have reportedly reached out to request an interview with the veteran coach.

Dianna Russini on X (formerly Twitter): “The Raiders are requesting an interview with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for their head-coaching spot, per sources. / X”

The Raiders are requesting an interview with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for their head-coaching spot, per sources.

Spagnuolo has coached in the NFL since 1999 and was head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011.

If Spagnuolo ends up in Las Vegas, it would lessen the blow of potentially losing defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and also rob the Chiefs of one of the most accomplished defensive coordinators in the league.

  1. I’m not a big fan of Tom Brady after that “Tuck Rule” from year’s ago. No, I’m not over that yet. BUT, I hope Tom gets full control of the Raiders to include buying out Mark Davis. I’m not sure he has a clue what a football is, more less a football team. Antonio Pierce didn’t have a chance on earth with the team he had. I’m sorry to see he only got one season. Man, the Raiders sure do make it hard for me to root for them.

  2. Whoever they decide on had better last more than 1 or 2 years because this is getting embarrassing. Other teams can hold on to coaches and let them build the team. But Pierce was never given that chance.

  3. I agree with that but I must admit he mad e abax decisions by putting not having AOD as the #1 Q.B so being a Raiders Nation Fan I’m glad he got fired but let’s I’m keep him as a LB coach.

  4. I agree to an extent. What upset me with Pierce is that he stuck with Minshew , when it was obvious that he just didn’t fit in. Also and this also falls on the GM. Knowing that the offensive line couldn’t pass or run block the Raiders kept looking for receivers. Fans kept seeing the same thing over and over and yet the coaching staff somehow expected different results.
