Is something going on between Jackson Powers-Johnson and the Raiders’ coaching staff?
From the outside, it sure seems that way.
Not only did Powers-Johnson have to scrap and claw to wiggle into a starting job at the start of the season, now it seems no matter how bad the guards on the roster perform, Powers-Johnson is the offensive lineman that continues to stay on the bubble.
Head coach Pete Carroll was asked on Wednesday if he is considering moving Powers-Johnson back to center and it seemed obvious from is response that Carroll didn’t have a lot of patience for the question.
After emphasizing that Powers-Johnson was “absolutely not” moving back to center, Carroll said Powers-Johnson is now back to competing for playing time with Alex Cappa, who has somehow managed to have a lower Pro Football Focus grade this year (50.4) than he did a year ago (50.5).
You don’t have to be a communications expert to sense the sour vibe from Carroll talking about Powers-Johnson, and it’s a strange dynamic considering the interior of the Raiders’ offensive line has played so poorly in the last two weeks with Powers-Johnson on the sideline.
Going into the season, Powers-Johnson looked like the best thing going (along with Kolton Miller) on the Raiders’ offensive line. The former second-round pick is only in his second NFL season and seems to have as much potential as any offensive lineman on the roster.
But for reasons unknown, the coaching staff in Las Vegas isn’t enthusiastic about JPJ.
At some point, maybe we’ll learn the reasons why.
x: @raidersbeat
It’s absolute lunacy. Cappa shouldn’t be in the NFL, Parham gets his **** pushed in on every play, Glaze looks lost, Miller has been just OK. Yet, they guy the coaching staff is picking on is the best among them.
Something is definitely going on with JPJ. I think maybe he had an argument in the preseason with Brennan Carroll and got on his **** list.
Brennan Carroll needs to get fired, regardless. He shouldn’t be anywhere near an NFL team.
I wish the NFL had some type of reverse Rooney Rule type disincentives for all the nepotism babies. All sports leagues seem to be plagued with the issue, but the NFL may be the worst. Maybe strip draft picks from teams that hire family members of existing coaches/ front offices. I’d say owners, too, but then there wouldn’t be any owners left!
Exactly this is beyond stupid. This idiot organization preaches “compete” yet JPJ is so bad that he’s the only one on that OL who has to compete for his job. This place is a joke. The mind games they play with JPJ for Spytek’s crap guard is beyond insanity.
All to prove a point which IDK what it is.
Enjoy your next team JPJ, I’m sure they won’t play games with you & give you an honest shot. Maxx tell Brady & his boy what teams you want to go to
The offesive line isn’t flourishing under Pete. Last season the line was at least mediocre but this year? Uh…shall we say poor?
Move JPJ back to center, and keep an eye out for a trade that can help our O line!!!!!!!!
The entire situation screams that Pete and Pete’s kid don’t want to admit they were wrong. JPJ is the better center and can at least move an opposing player unlike Meredith who’s constantly pushed back with Parham or Meredith is calling the wrong assignments. All opposing teams do is a simple stunt and it’ll take 3 guys out of the play
Pete retire already !! You are an *** !!
Sort Answer… Brennan Carroll is a HorseShit Coach. JPJ is a GREAT talent – a Mauler and a Road Grader. He is the type of palyer that a Good Coach Dreams about Coaching up to All Pro Status. This Staff does not have that Coach presently… Winning Football or Your useless Son getting Paid… which is it Pete?
Like what happens when a new regime takes over, they have nothing invested in other GM draft picks so they have no problem trading or benching a high 2nd rd draft pick. If the owner had an inkling on what was going on, he’d step in and ask the hard questions. Told you Kool Aid drinkers, Brady hasn’t put together a peewee team much less a pro team!
I can’t stand Brady. Of course nothing changes since Mark wont sell like the Buss family did
Exactly. The team culture is crap. The Buffalo Bills became contenders as soon as new ownership took over. Hopefully Mark sells so he can concentrate on his woman’s basketball team!
Like I always say, it doesn’t have to be like this. This is a DESIRED brand/franchise.
Top 10 revenue, Vegas. We could have the Fertita family & Guggenheim group get into a bidding war
