J.J. Watt Offered a Pointed Message to Raiders Owner Mark Davis on Antonio Pierce

Mark Davis probably isn’t looking for another advisor in his search for the Raiders’ next head coach, but if he needs one more, a three-time defensive player of the year offered a good piece of advice on Wednesday.

Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, former Texans great J.J. Watt shared his thoughts on current interim head coach Antonio Pierce…

“They need to hire A.P… I don’t know why there’s even a question. A.P. should absolutely be the coach. What is there to contemplate? Who would be mad if A.P. was the coach? Any fans? No. Any players? No. The media? No. Who would be upset if he was the coach?

The players are fully bought in and vocally supportive. Every step of the way has been checked. I don’t really know what the downside to keeping him would be, especially when you’ve tried a few different coaches over the last couple years and none of them worked out.

Let’s say this one doesn’t work out. Everybody was on board, so I would rather try the guy that everybody is on board with and have that fail, than try and do something crazy and have that fail and people say ‘why didn’t you just stick with the guy that we all wanted anyway? It’s not that hard, man.”

Along with Jim Harbaugh, Pierce is considered one of the top two candidates for the Raiders’ head coaching job. It was reported on Wednesday that the Tennessee Titans would like to interview Pierce for their head coaching vacancy, and the Giants are reportedly interested in interviewing him to potentially be their next defensive coordinator.

There isn’t a lot known about what Davis is thinking, but it is widely assumed that Tom Brady will play a key role in the team’s decision on their next head coach.

Brady was part of the reason the Raiders hired Josh McDaniels, and if he is part of the decision-making process again, many believe he would be inclined to go with Harbaugh over the linebacker that helped ruin the Patriots’ perfect season in 2007… probably not for that reason, but with Brady you never know.

  1. but if brady was who we listened to for JMD and we all know how that turned out, why in the world should we follow the same guys’ advice again?

    1. We arent, Mark Davis is . Who the heck knows whats going on in the cavernous space between Marks ears and directly under his bowl cut …what we do know is he is responsible for so many bad decisions he should be fined for malpractice of ownership if that was a thing. TBshold worry about safegaurding his suitcase of sb rings and let Mark be Mark. Comeon Mark have YOU smartened up yet …hire AP and put the bad decisions behind you

  2. I feel the Raiders should take a chance with AP. For the simple fact. They haven’t done ( Sh—) since 2003. That was a mockery of the Raiders organization. It can’t get worser. Big name are fine for the public but the players won’t a Freaking **** good coach. That’s my 3 cents. Vincente G.Miller

  3. AP should be head coach. I was not a fan of him at first he won me over by “putting his resume on the field.” Davis seems to be allergic to winning so he will probably pull the last thread of fabric and let him go.

  4. There is nothing to really think about. AP did everything that Mark Davis asked of him. He’s made two BIG mistakes already, don’t make a third by letting AP slip through your fingers.

  5. 💯 % agree with JJ Mark Davis can’t get out of his own way.

Especially now we here MD is entertaining Verbal and Belichick for God’s sake MD what the F are you doing ???

  6. Antonio Pierce is the man for the job, he has a solid background as a NFL ex-player and plus the coaching skills for the game. AP has captures his players (Attention) and the (RESPECT) they have for AP as their coach. That’s the kind of experience you want in your players meetings, film study, practices, locker room and on the field on game day, (Camaraderie) that’s the environment that wins games and championships!!! FACTS!!! Raiders Nation

  7. R8ERS FAN FOR LIFE AS IM SURE MOST OF YOU READING ARE SO WITH THAT SAID I CAN’T STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A LOCKERROOM FULL OF MEN & THERE 100% CONFIDENCE & BELIEF IN YOU IS. IN MY OPINION THAT’S BASICALLY HALF THE BATTLE IF NOT MORE. I PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR 7 YEARS AS A YOUTH & WHEN YOUR WHOLE SQUAD WOULD RUN THROUGH A BRICK WALL FOR YOU WELL, THERE’S NOT ANOTHER FEEL THAT CAN DUPLICATE THAT BROTHERHOOD & TRUST THAT BRINGS THE TEAM TOGETHER IN SUCH UNITY. I GET WHAT SOME ARE SAYING, THE WHOLE HE’S NOT AN X’s & O’s GUY BUT @ THE SAME TIME LET THE FACTS SPEAK 4 THEMSELVES, HE’S ALREADY DONE SOME THINGS TO MAKE HISTORY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! BEAT KC@HOME, (1ST TIME SINCE GRUDEN A FEW YEARS BACK) 63POINTS, MANAGED TO GET THE DEFENSE TO RE-IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS A TOP 3@ LEAST SINCE TAKING THE REIGNS. COMBINE THAT WITH WHAT I SAID BOUT ALREADY WINNING HALF THE BATTLE & U GOT YOURSELF A CONTENDER LADY’S & GENT’S. DEVELOPMENT OF THAT QB WHICH IM JUST AS IMPRESSED BY I DON’T SEE HOW IT’S EVEN A QUESTION. GRAB AN OFFENSE OF COORDINATOR & LET’S SEE WHERE THIS NOT ONLY PASSIONATE BUT SMART MOTIVATIONAL & BORN RAIDER CAN TAKE US, PERIOD! (MINE ALONG WITH MANY OTHER’S OPINION, “I THINK”🩶🖤

  8. Mark Davis is no Al Davis and has not done a good job as owner
Staying with Derick Carr was a waste of years
Mark and his staff are starting to put together a Raider team that MAY GET them back to the days of John Madden and Ken Stabler.
Today the Raiders are very poor at pass blocking for O’Connell but are improving.
He is their quarterback of the future.
He is very accurate with his passing like Stabler and is calm and doesn’t get rattled just like the poise of Stabler. OConnell has shown great leadership with the Raiders who love playing for him. Furthermore he has a strong arm like Daryl Lamonica who was throwing the deep pass to Warren Wells. That was Al Davis’s favorite play and why he brought Lamonica to the Raiders in 1967. So O’Connell is a fantastic combination of Stabler and Lamonica. Complaints from analysts is O’Connell is not mobile enough. Raiders have never had a running quarterback. Lamonica, Stabler and
Plunkett etc . were pocket quarterbacks and did not have running abilities. Look at the greatest quarterback in NFL history, Tom Brady was not a running quarterback either.
Only time you need a quarterback to run is if your offensive front 4 are no good. Look at Stabler who hardly ever got sacked and had all the time he needed to complete a pass. His offensive line included Art Shell and Gene Upshaw the greatest tackle and guard in NFL history. Hopefully Mark Davis will make the right choices. Draft for offensive linemen who can pass protect and of course the running game.
Pierce is a no brainer. He should get the HEAD COACH position.

  9. If the Raiders don’t take him, Tennessee will. Both teams can’t go wrong with having him at the head coach position. He has already proven himself.

  10. One mistake was already made by not acquiring Bisaccia, who had the compete confidence of the team, as well as a great performance record, with the position, controversy, and distractions that he was faced with, as interim head coach. This I’d the first I have heard that Brady was key in the decision to hire JMD. Might as well listen to Trump when it comes to selecting the next President. I’m going to talk to Marc D., personally, so that I know what needs to get done, is going to get done. So everyone rest easy…AP is going to be the new head coach of the Raiders. I’ll leave the personnel and player position choices to them.
