Jon Gruden Doesn’t Love NFL Officiating Just Like You Don’t Love NFL Officiating

Looking for another reason to love Jon Gruden?

How about this one.

He hates NFL officiating just like you do.

In an interview with NFL Films’ Steve Sabol not long after leaving the Buccaneers, Gruden was asked about the biggest changes he’s seen with within the NFL since he started in coaching.

“It starts with the rules. The instant replay, the rules interpretations have changed. I think the tuck rule is a crock of sh-t, personally.”

Sabol reminded Gruden that officiating has always been his gripe about the league.

“You and I have had dinner together, at least a half an hour is always set aside for you to talk about the officiating.”

Gruden responded with his usual snark.

“It used to be when you watched a football game, if there was a holding call, they might show the referee signal holding, now they’ve got their own television show. We’ve got put a microphone on the referee so we can hear ‘holding… offense… number 77… the right guard… [does the Hochuli hand clap] that’ll be a 15-yard penalty and a first down.’ It drives me crazy.”

Gruden hates the sideshows.

You can imagine what he thought of Gene Steratore’s smirk and folded index card.

As it turns out, Gruden isn’t necessarily beloved by NFL officiating crews, either.

In 2011, former Vice President of NFL officiating and current Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira had strong words for Gruden, who at that time was working for ESPN.

“I am not a fan of Gruden’s. Not today, not yesterday, not when I worked for the NFL and not when I was working on the field as a side judge. He was a loudmouth as a coach who constantly disrespected officials and he is a blowhard in the broadcast booth who spouts off when he doesn’t know what he is talking about.”

Does that mean the feeling is mutual?

If so, no complaints here.

    1. how many games have these so called pro refs thrown.sunday the patriots got a free ticket to the SB….thnx refs!!

  1. Well who gives a **** what Pierra thinks? He sits in the booth himself and disagrees with calls just made on the field. Why is he even there in the booth if he cant call down to the refs and tell them to fix the call? WTF! I guess replay only stands for players and not the refs especially if Pierra disagrees with the calls? Its a joke!

  2. Gruden forgot more about the NFL than the refs think they know. Sure he’s a little too loud sometimes but if you’re going to be heard and noticed by the refs you better **** be loud enough to get their attention

  3. Why? Because he calls out the officials when they do poorly? These officials have/so constantly screw over the Raiders.. a bunch of morons..

  4. Awwwww someone didn’t like it when the NFL and the refs fixed games for Vegas and pointed it out to their face? Boo hooo snowflake.

  5. It is sad that NFL football is as fixed as pro wrestling. The reds don’t deserve any respect, why do they assume that they do? Respect for what? Having some part time job they don’t answer for when they mess up, I am guessing that most of the refs are bought and paid for. Football is such a joke, I wish it wasn’t. The Raiders get screwed so much, poor Tom Flores is gonna have a heart attack one of these days watching this utter nonsense.
