Jon Gruden Said Derek Carr “Didn’t Blink” On Day One Of Raiders New Offense

Jon Gruden has been clear on one thing for months. He plans to stretch the Raiders offense, particularly Derek Carr, early and often this offseason.

Tuesday was Gruden’s first chance to test his quarterback and Carr said Gruden’s first day of real football activities was as advertised.

He threw everything at me,” Carr told media members after the first day of minicamp.

“He tried to get me. To see if I was listening to him in the meetings and all those things”

But his head coach says Carr was as expected right out of the gate.

“I got really excited out there today,” Gruden said.

“You can have a real creative imagination with [Carr] at your quarterback position. He can make every throw. It comes out of his hand fast and accurate. He’s mobile. He’s sharp. He’s a great leader.”

Gruden said he tried to make it tough on his quarterback on day one and Carr was “all over it.”

“We tried to give him some audibles, different situations on the very first day. He didn’t blink.”

Carr said the verbiage of Gruden’s offense has been a challenge but that it’s coming together quickly.

“The number one thing was speaking the same language,” Carr said of his new play-calling lingo. “We’re about 90 percent there.”

Not bad for day one.

  1. Its sounds good. I’m all on board. I hope for great things for the Raiders. I do every year. I wasn’t a Derek Carr fan when he came outta college. I watched him closely in his bowl game against USC & was less than impressed. I didn’t want the Raiders to draft him but thats why I don’t pick. Today I wear his jersey proudly & can’t wait to see what innovative offense Gruden has concocted. Raider Nation has waited along time to see the return Chucky. I honestly can’t wait.
