Cam Newton Speaks on Christian Wilkins Rumors: “That’s Not Why He Got Released”

The rumors around Christian Wilkins have calmed down in recent days, but the consensus seems to be that whatever happened in the Raiders locker room involving Wilkins wasn’t limited to just a playful kiss on a teammate’s forehead.

Eventually, more details will emerge but based on what has been reported to this point, and former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton shared his thoughts on the Wilkins situation this week on his podcast.

On the 4th and 1 with Cam Newton podcast, Newton said he believes the Raiders just got tired of Wilkins’ antics.

“Make no mistake about this. This is a perfect example of a team, a coach, an organization being fed up,” Newton said of the Raiders decision to release Wilkins. “If that was his only infraction, I guarantee all the money that I got my name on, if that was his only offense, that’s not why he got released…”

Newton added that Wilkins apparently didn’t have the “ability to read a room” and said the former Raiders’ defensive tackle was known for trying to get under the skin of opponents on the field.

It has been reported that Adam Butler is the teammate that took Wilkins’ alleged actions to the Raiders’ human resources department, but no one has been willing to speak on the full nature of what happened.

For the most part, beat writers and league insiders have been treading lightly on the Wilkins story, but a handful of podcasters and YouTube hosts have covered the story better than many of their mainstream media counterparts.

Raiders podcast host Graphk Raider talked last week about what he has heard on the Wilkins story, and he said the details floating around behind closed doors are far worse than what Schefter casually referenced on The Pat McAfee Show.

“Adam Schefter and Pat McAfee were saying that it was a kiss on the forehead and, once again, I’m hearing totally different things behind the scenes that it’s even worse than that,” Graphk said on his OVL Raiders Network podcast.

“I’ve heard from multiple people now. After the show yesterday… one of my guys out there that was on the ground told me about it. I’ve heard from two or three separate people now that it’s way more deep than a kiss on the forehead.”

  1. If he was being disruptive and disrespectful in the locker, then good riddance.

  2. He was ridiculously overpaid last year by a terrible GM and that price tag along with a major injury are the reasons he was released. Plain and simple the new FO wanted more $$ to throw at 35 year old mediocre QBs or just in case Maxx wants more $$ since Watt and Myles have more than him now.
