Pat McAfee Shares What He Has Heard About Tom Brady Throughout the Raiders Interview Process

It’s no secret that Raiders minority owner Tom Brady has been very involved in the process of finding the next GM and head coach in Las Vegas, but according to Pat McAfee, Brady it literally running the show in Vegas right now.

McAfee said Brady has been “very active” and running the interviews with prospective general managers and coaches.

“It’s a fluid situation, but what we’re being told and hearing out of Las Vegas is that Tom Brady is running that ship,” McAfee said on his Wednesday show. “This isn’t like Tom Brady’s just a fly on the wall. This isn’t like ‘Oh, how does this go?’ What we’re being is that Tom Brady is the one asking the questions; Tom Brady is the one kind of conducting the interviews; Tom Brady is the one that is figuring out what’s the right way and what’s wrong.”

Brady was on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Wednesday and he talked about how he is still learning his new role in Las Vegas.

He said it has been a “collaborate effort” among the Raiders ownership group and decision-makers in the organization. He didn’t say it, but it is believed Brady is also leaning heavily on fellow minority owner Richard Seymour in the process.

As of Thursday morning, there has only been one significant hire with Brady in the building and that was GM John Spytek, who was announced on Wednesday.

Spytek has a relationship with Brady that goes all the way back to their time as teammates at the University of Michigan, and he had been a front runner for the job since former GM Tom Telesco was fired on January 9.

The timing of Spytek’s hiring suggests Brady and company were open to the idea of Ben Johnson bringing his own GM to Las Vegas, but that idea fell apart when Johnson chose the Bears over the Raiders on Monday.

There’s another theory to what went wrong between Johnson and the Raiders, and you can jump over to that story here.

It’s been three days since Johnson announced his decision to go to Chicago, and the longer the hiring process plays out in Las Vegas, it’s looking like the decision-makers in the Raiders’ building are having trouble coming to a consensus on their no. 2 option.

Every indication is that Pete Carroll is the next coach in line, but the Raiders clearly have some level of reservation around Carroll as the process continues to drag out.

Carroll has been getting the most attention for the Raiders’ HC job, but Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer says there’s another familiar name for Raider fans to keep an eye on.

“I think Tom Brady’s personal relationships are a factor here,” Breer said on the Rich Eisen Show. “One thing that I did hear was not to rule out was not to rule out Pete Carroll or Steve Spagnuolo because Brady has respect for them having gone up against them.”

  1. Ridiculous. Tom Brady running the show and asking questions. Zero experience at running any kind of organization. Hires his buddy to be the GM.

Mark Davis just needs to sell the team at this point.

He’s turned the Raiders into a clown show.

“We’re looking for someone long term.” Interviews Pete Carroll who is 73.

This is going to turn into a huge disaster.

    1. Agree100%. Sadly, I will be rooting for complete failure of the team I grew up loving until Mork the dork sells the team.

  2. Overlooking the fact that he’s Brady’s buddy, thus guy does have front office experience so he may turn out to be a good GM. I’m sure Brady will lean on this guy in making the HC hire. The picture is now clear, this is now the Tom Brady show. Hopefully it turns out better than the Mark Davis show?!

    1. I don’t trust this hire. If he was so good, the “wiz kid”, why wasn’t he hired as a GM before?

People who are really great assistants don’t have to wait for just promotions.

Nick Sirianni went from OC to head coach in 3 seasons.

People with real talent get known quickly and are gobbled up. Teams don’t wait.

Brady using the Raiders as a personal joyride. Disgraceful.

  3. Boy, the interest in Spags because Brady had difficulty facing him has some bad similarities to AP hiring Luke Getsy because he whipped the Raiders’ asses the year prior. It’s just not sound process, IMO. Choose the coach that brings the most positive attributes to the table. Not the guy who had defenses Tom Brady didn’t like to face…. Maybe Spags is a good choice, but that wouldn’t be the reason.

  4. Man, is Mark that inept at everything? Tom is running the show? Why, because he knows how a front office actually works? Based on what, all of his experience putting together great teams? Hiring his old friend as GM and albeit a SB winning coach this team will be 4th in the West for a long time. What a terrible decision to not overpay for Ben Johnson!!!!!!

    1. Sounds like all you guys could probly do a better job as owner and the coaches but why haven’t you guys got the call 🤔 why not shut up your not getting the call so sit back be a armchair whatever you all are sure not raider fans more likely chief fans your new president is 78 so…
