Amik Robertson hasn’t made many headlines since the beginning of Raiders training camp, but he did make our list of the players you’re going to hear more about soon.
As it turns out, “soon” is already “now” as The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said things are starting to come together for the Raiders fourth round rookie.
“Rookie cornerback Amik Robertson is starting to get his footing, and lined up outside at Wednesday’s practice,” Tafur reported on Wednesday. “Seen as the future slot corner, Robertson is trying to earn a role this season while Lamarcus Joyner starts inside.”
Regardless of where the Raiders are lining up Robertson, it’s Joyner that should feel the most pressure from the rookie. Not only was Robertson drafted to play nickel cornerback, but Joyner is almost certain not to return next year with his $11.2 million cap number.
Just a guess, but look for Robertson to find his way onto the field in a significant role at some point this season. Once he is comfortable and understands his place in Paul Guenther’s defense, Robertson is too talented to leave on the sideline – especially if a particular cornerback struggles again this year.
