Raiders Beat Writer Hints at Significant Trade, Offers Clue to Team Involved

The Raiders made a big splash in the opening hours of free agency, but other than the addition of Gardner Minshew, they have been quiet in the last 36 hours of legal tampering.

One of the reasons they weren’t active on Tuesday might be the fact that they handed out $110 million to Christian Wilkins and another $25 million to Minshew. But there could be another situation playing out behind the scenes.

According to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, the Raiders are monitoring a significant trade situation involving an expensive veteran.

“I think there is a player that is a potential trade that is not out there and not on the market yet that could come up available,” Hondo said on the OLV Raiders Network. “I think if I were to report it, it could potentially hurt the Raiders and I don’t think that’s my spot.”

“I am not saying that the trade is imminent,” Hondo later continued. “What I am saying, though, is the team that has the player probably is going to be in a position where they are going to need to get [salary cap] relief and look for the Raiders to pounce.”

There are a handful of teams that could be looking for salary cap relief in the days ahead, but the team that stands out today is the Las Angeles Chargers.

Tom Telesco’s former team is $25 million over the cap and could be forced to trade or even release one or more of their most recognizable stars.

Jason_OTC on Twitter: “The only team that may still have significant salary cap hurdles to clear is the #Chargers. Unless they did something last night they are around $25M over. Will need to decide on Bosa, Allen, Mack, and Williams before 4PM. Those four count for over $142M on the cap / Twitter”

The Raiders haven’t been linked to any deals with the Chargers, but…

If Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, Khalil Mack or Mike Williams become available… which player would make the most sense for the Raiders?

  1. Would any of those guys equate to money well spent considering the more pressing needs we have? If it’s one of the pass rushers, what does that mean for the development of Koonce and Wilson? Neither of those WRs really excite me either based on how this team is built. Tee Higgins, on the other hand, as a #2 on the outside and future #1 after Davante . . .sign me up.

  2. I LOVE Mack… at the right price but I think Bosa would be the best sign and make the defensive front line almost unfair to all offenses. KC would have no answers. If we signed Bosa and drafted a corner in the first round, then a linebacker in the later rounds, the rest of the draft and free agency could concentrate on how to score points and keep our QB vertical.

  3. None of this happened. The Chargers have cut and restructured already. Just shows more media made up BS and guessing for clicks.

  4. I would rather have Derwin James than any on the list above. Bosa would be good if he weren’t so injury prone. We have so many good receivers that we just gave away our pro bowler receiver in Renfrow. I would rather have kept him over Williams or Allen. Mack is too old and we already have good edge rushers, unless we got him for much less than the Chargers are paying him.
