Raiders Flagship Radio Host: “I Think It’s Going to be Pete Carroll”

The Raiders officially signed John Spytek to a reported five-year deal on Thursday night, and with their GM now in place, the search can ramp up in Las Vegas for a head coach.

The dream of hiring Ben Johnson died on Monday and if the Raiders had a backup plan in place, they have not been quick to act on it.

Pete Carroll and Steve Spagnuolo are the two coaches that have been linked to the Raiders in recent days, and a report on Monday evening called Carroll the new favorite for the job.

“The Raiders have to turn to their alternatives, and former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is believed to be the Raiders’ top option, according to league sources,” The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reported on Monday night. “Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is also believed to be a strong candidate, but many around the league expect him to wind up with the New Orleans Saints, the team he played for and coached for, or the New York Jets, who he also played for.”

Carroll had been in the conversation for the Raiders’ job prior to the reported interest in Johnson, but as time goes by, it seems clear there isn’t a consensus in the building on who the next head coach should be.

Nevertheless, at least one media personality covering the team believes Carroll is still the best bet to get the job.

“I think it’s Pete Carroll. I think he’s going to end up getting the job, but until we actually know for sure, we don’t know for sure,” Raider Nation Radio’s Q Myers said on Thursday on his Locked on Raiders podcast.

He wasn’t making prediction or claiming to have inside information, but as someone around the team and working for the Raiders’ flagship radio station, Myers’ opinion should be considered better than most.

There was some anxiety among Raider fans on Thursday evening, prior to Spytek signing his deal, that he might bolt to the Jaguars with Liam Coen, who he worked with in Tampa Bay.

It has not been reported why it took nearly 36 hours for Spytek to sign his deal in Las Vegas, but there’s a good chance it had something to do with his contract. A five-year deal for a first-time general manager is a sizeable commitment.

UPDATE: It was reported on Friday morning that the Raiders and Carroll have reached a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth year.

Pete Carroll will be the next head coach of the Raiders.

  1. Carroll is the coach.

Raiders will.now draft Jeanty and the offense will be run, run, run, punt.

  2. Welp, that’s the third head coach hire that I thoroughly detest. Having Petey on the sideline chewing his gum and being an overt attention hog, which is aided and abetted by camera operators that seemingly are infatuated with him is revolting. Yuck tooey…..
