Raiders Have Been Stubbornly Running Against Stacked Boxes… And No Team Does It Worse

The Raiders don’t run the ball a lot, but when they do, they too many times like to run against stacked boxes for little or no gain.

In his Stats and Storylines column this week, Travis Gilkeson noted how stubborn the Raiders have been at running against defensive alignments with 7 or more defenders in the box.

“No team has less success running the ball into stacked boxes than the Raiders,” Gilkeson wrote. “Unfortunately, that’s not for a lack of trying, either, as only ten teams have a higher rate. That’s a stubbornly bad combo.”

The chart below from Arjun Menon shows just how bad the Raiders have been at running the ball when the defense is prepared to defend the run. Essentially, they haven’t been effective at running the ball in running situations.

What this means is the Raiders need to find solutions to their running game. They either need to critique their running scheme or abandon the run more often.

What doesn’t need to happen, though, is an organizational effort to double down on a ground-and-pound approach that isn’t working right now in Las Vegas…

Warren Sharp on Twitter: “”I’m told the Raiders will re-emphasize the run game today. There’s been high-level communication throughout the organization about not getting the ball to Josh Jacobs enough” – @JasonLaCanfora / Twitter”

One thing the Raiders are good at, though, is fooling the defense into believing they will run. Derek Carr has a 127.6 rating when utilizing play action over the last six weeks.

Just win with what works, baby!

  1. And the line needs to run block. Brandon Parker has played some shitty football. Watch him trying to pull! But I agree we need to audible out of those stacked box runs. Earlier in the season we were telegraphing the run with the personnel. I think that was Gruden being an arrogant fool.

  2. Rodney hudson, gabe Jackson traded. Richie missing in action basically given a severance package for who knows what reason. Dude has played 10 0r 15 games for the raiders don’t understand the point in keeping him. Didn’t mention. Bird legs that was traded back to New England.

  3. Yeah and it pisses me off I also don’t like going into prevent defense at the beginning of the fourth quarter when we have a lead just plain stupid, enter cars more up and down than a roller coaster I don’t understand it! Is the guy on the take or something, I’ve been sticking with him but no more, we need a guy we can count on to play the same way every game!!!

    1. I was a Carr guy for years but he is NOT EVER going to be the answer! He is to scared out there you can see it! He missed so meany wide open WR didn’t even look for them just checked it down over n over! When he did throw to open Wr he over throws them time n time again! We can’t pay him the 30 million a year he is going to be asking for next contract it’s time to draft a franchise QB

  4. You want a better run game? Hire Harbaugh from Michigan you will definitely see an improvement in all phases.

  5. For the last time , anyone in their rite mind knows what needs to be done! A new Broom sweeps the floor good but an old broom knows where the dirt is!!!! Clean the House! What’s wrong with the true fan base! Why can’t they see it! Where’s AL when we need him! Young Innovative ” blood needed! Yesterday would have been Late”!!!

  6. Get rid of the coaching staff and start passing more and abandoned the run game because it’s not working ok and we need better skill players that means better draft picks and use second string quarterback more and maybe we start winning games

  7. Give Mariota a shot. We know what we have with Carr. He’s more concern about his stats than winning. Always padding his stats during Carrbage time.
8 years with team same old crap.

  8. Tom Cable has over stayed his welcome. He should have been gone the same time with KNJ and JDR. But I guess JDR had his revenge on Sunday. It’s been a rough last 20 years….

  9. Bench Carr, start Marriota. If Carr gets pissed off, good!!! Maybe THEN he will start trying a lot harder to be the QB he thinks he is. And if not, don’t let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya.
