Are the Raiders operating under a mandate from owner Mark Davis to take a quarterback in the 2025 draft?
It’s a rumor that’s been making rounds and it was brought up again this week by a respected national insider.
According to Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer, the Raiders may soon be operating under a directive from the top to take a quarterback in the draft.
“I’ve heard the football people there could be under a mandate to draft a quarterback in April,” Breer reported on Tuesday. “And if that’s the plan, whoever the head coach is will have a pretty big impact on who that quarterback is, and how he develops early in his career. This makes the question whether Mark Davis believes Pierce would be the right guy to captain the ship.”
Going into last week the Raiders appeared desperate for a quarterback, but Aidan O’Connell will have the final five weeks of the season to change that perception
O’Connell got off to a good start on ‘Black Friday’ against the Chiefs and will face several defenses weaker than Kansas City in the weeks ahead.
As for the notion of a quarterback mandate in Las Vegas, ESPN beat writer Paul Gutierrez reported this week that there is no mandate…
“And the reemerging rumors of Davis issuing a mandate that general manager Tom Telesco must draft a quarterback? Simply not true, said a team source with knowledge of the situation.”
Mandate or no mandate, there’s a good chance the Raiders draft a quarterback in the first round even if O’Connell plays well to close out the season.
“I don’t think it matters what Aidan does the rest of the way,” The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said this week on the Just Win podcast.
“He’s not going to win this job for next year in the last five weeks. I think they’ll bring somebody in. Maybe draft and [add] a veteran guy. But clearly they know quarterback is still a big need even with Aidan in the mix.”

Lol, this kid is good, but hey trade him away, watch him go to a contender. So dumb!
I’ve seen enough of AOC to declare he is a career backup at best. Not sure why some of the nation thinks he is more than he is.
That’s good, because Aiden O’Connell is not a starting QB in the nfl. He would not start on any other team in the nfl but the raiders. He will be a back up his whole career.
How in the f—— can a person speculate that on O’Donnell, he’s not the problem. The whole team’s the problem, except for a few #94 is one of one. The coaching staff, the managers, especially the owner is the problem.
I’d like to see AOC start next year with a young guy developing behind him and a better offense at his command. This is called continuity. Given Turner a full year as OC and see what they can do. Changing horses every year is not working.
AOC with a good offensive coordinator Ana good quarterback coach which I think should be Rich Gannon because he’s high onAOC an Tom Brady also helping him come along perfect scenario Brady canschool him to be a smart quarterback in the pocket . The poor kid has had 4 different coaches who 3 of them were no good .Give him what he needs knowledge
Paul who? Another zero lucky enough to get paid to squeak rhetoric
This article is tripe. Mark Davis wants to win every game period. He knows that winning is good for everyone in his organization. Losing is never a good thing in the sports and entertainment industry. Ever. Tanking for a draft pick in a year that will yield a second tier quarterback at best is even dumber.
Tanking is for losers and loser can ESAD! No team, especially the Raiders needs weak, loser fans. Mark is Al’s son. He would never do this. RNFL!
