The Raiders weren’t excited to lose Tre’von Moehrig to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, but their consolation prize in Jeremy Chinn came with a smaller price tag and GM John Spytek is hopeful that Chinn will be as effective as his predecessor.
Last week, Spytek raved about Chinn and the unique set of skills the 6’3, 220-pound safety brings to the Raiders’ secondary.
“He’s got such an amazing skill set for a man of his size,” Spytek told ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. “And you love the intelligence and the instincts that go with it.”
“He’s like a big nickel,” Spytek continued. “You love his size on the edge, his ability to blitz, support the run. Then he’s a guy that can still drop and play as part of the deep coverage, too.”
Aside from the physical element Chinn brings to Vegas, he also brings a style of leadership the team didn’t necessarily have in the secondary a year ago.
According to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, Chinn has been more vocal than Moehrig was known to be in his four seasons with the team.
“Chinn is no slouch, and [him replacing Moehrig] is not a step backwards at all. In fact, he’s a little bit more vocal. I had one person tell me it’s different because they were used to Tre’von back there and Chinn’s a little bit more vocal,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.
“This was a great signing. To me, it’s a wash [that the Raiders replaced Moehrig with Chinn], so I don’t have a problem with it at all. He’s a very good player that they got at a very good price.”
Chinn is entering his sixth NFL season in 2025, and he has already started 67 games in his career.
In March, he agreed to a two-year, $16.25 million deal with the Raiders just hours after Moehrig went to the Panthers on a three-year, $51 million deal.

Chinn is replacing Diablo not TM. If JC is playing deep as much as TM does the secondary is in trouble. Look at the contracts and tell me I’m wrong. Look at JCs history and tell me I’m wrong. Out of all the moves I looked at going into the off-season actually made since. However I was looked him as a complement to TM but Carroll and Spytek didn’t understand how good TM actually was and could be in the Seattle scheme. They should’ve Franchised TM.
