Report: Former Raiders DC Could Return if Pete Carroll is Hired in Vegas

It was reported on Monday that Pete Carroll is the newest front runner to get the Raiders head coaching job, and if that happens it sounds like a familiar name would be in the running to be his defensive coordinator in Las Vegas.

According to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, Gus Bradley is expected to be on Carroll’s short list of defensive coordinator candidates.

“There’s a good chance if [Carroll] were to come, he may bring Gus Bradley,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “Now literally just a few moments ago, I was talking to an executive who told me that he is hearing that Carroll would bring his sons over to be part of his staff. What about reuniting with Gus Bradley, who the Raider players absolutely love? That’s certainly a possibility with Patrick Graham moving on.”

Raider fans might be open to the idea of having Bradley in the building again, but it would be tough to sell him as an upgrade to Patrick Graham.

Carroll (and apparently his kids) would bring a winning pedigree to Las Vegas, but if the Raiders are going to settle for someone other than their no. 1 choice, they should take a long look at Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo is already familiar with the roster, he knows the AFC West as well as any coach in the league, and who would be better equipped to slow down Patrick Mahomes than a coach that’s been in Kansas City for the last six years?

Even if Spagnuolo doesn’t turn out to be the next Bill Belichick (failing in his first coaching tenure but finding success in his second) the Raiders would at least strip the Chiefs of their most valuable assistant coach.

If there are no home run hires left on the Raiders’ list of head coaching candidates, they need to be absolutely certain Spagnuolo isn’t the guy before going in another direction.

  1. I believe I have a better HC for us. Eric Bieniemy, keep Patrick Graham as DC. Find a GM sign Tee Higgins, Hendon Hooker. Beef up the front line.

    1. Bienemy has never been a HC, has run his own offense the last 2 years since he finally left KC.. He was fired at both places due to his offenses not being any good.. No one else is even interviewing the guy to satisfy the Rooney Rule.. Higgins is very good but misses a few games every year and will likely want a huge contract like Adams had..I’d like to see Graham come back but that ship seems to have sailed.. Hooker isn’t a free agent for at least 1 more year so he would have to be acquired in a trade.. This team doesn’t need to be trading draft picks for unproven players going into their 3rd year do they? If Johnson had taken the job maybe but that ship has sailed also..

  2. Why haven’t we talked to Kellen Moore he’s a good young OC who has worked with Zac Prescott, Jalen Heard, WHY higher Pete Carroll a 73 year old HC, yes a great coach, but in 2 years we will be doing this all over again, this reminds me of the Rams when they hired Dick Vermeil to build the Rams Greatest Show on Turf, where he groomed his replacement

  3. No Spagnola. He’s already had his chance of being a head coach and he was awful and I mean dreadful, horrible. He was one of the worst head coaches in the league. Absolutely no to Spagnola. Some coaches are just meant to be coordinators and that’s a fact and Spagnola is one of those coaches. Just like Josh McDaniels.. a good coordinator, a horrible head-coach.

  4. Thought you were about to say Ken Norton Jr. Hell to the No. Gus isn’t great either. He didn’t light the world on fire in Indy when he left.

  5. Noooooi! It wasn’t until Pierce took over as an interim head coach last year that our defense finally showed some diversity in game planning and in game adjustments. Graham crackers couldn’t figure that out and was always out coached in the second half of every game we played. Move on from him.
Maybe Leonard can take us to the next level. Stay in house.

  6. We need a coach that is younger sorry Pete. There is a spot for you in west palm beach lawn bowling club. Hang it up sir you won a SB and a college championship. You are a legend. Hire Monken he’s young offensive minded and has worked with bowers in Georgia. Bring in Spytek for gm and Saleh for dc. Build something here don’t put a band aid on it. Pick Milroe at 6. He’s a dual threat qb with 4.3 speed you can’t teach speed.

    1. Milroe at 6? That would be the biggest reach of the draft. He’s not even projected to go in the first round. We don’t need to reach for a QB just cause we need one. I wouldn’t draft any of these QBs in the first round especially not with a top ten pick. Milroe I believe will be a NFL bust. I think most of these QBs are gonna be bust.

  7. Man it sucks that AP didn’t work out but I guess he just wasn’t the answer but I’m just wondering what coach Tom Brady has in mind especially since hè didn’t get his boy Vrabel I wouldn’t mind Pete Carroll but I just want to see them turn the team around it seems like it’s the Dallas of the AFC just worried about filling the seats

  8. I really wanna believe that the Raiders aren’t as stupid as the fan holding up a tank for Shadmanuer sign at raider games.
