It had been rumored for a while that if Greg Papa ever parted ways with the Raiders, he might be a candidate to join their rivals from across the bay.
According to a report in The Athletic, that transition is already happening and Papa is set to join the 49ers pregame and postgame shows for NBC Sports Bay Area:
“Raiders fans still sore over Greg Papa’s departure from the Raiders broadcast booth probably won’t feel better knowing that he’ll be sliding into Dave Feldman’s seat as the studio anchor for 49ers pregame and postgame shows on NBC Sports Bay Area this season. Joining Papa and Maiocco, and replacing Dennis Brown (who’ll be handling more KNBR responsibilities), is former 49ers wood-layer Donte “Hitner” Whitner.”
Papa reportedly fell out of favor with Raiders ownership and hinted to as much on his radio show after being let go by the Raiders. His transition to 49ers coverage should be a smooth process, however, as the vast majority of his NFL content (whether by his choosing or not) on 95.7 The Game over the past nine months has revolved around the 49ers.
While he isn’t employed by the 49ers in his new role, anyone calling games for the 49ers in the Bay Area should be on notice because there aren’t many who do it better than Papa. If Papa is getting more connected with the 49ers, it won’t be long before he finds a higher profile role with or at least around the team.
