Report: Raiders Could Have Had Matthew Stafford with Better Offer

The Raiders didn’t pull off a trade for Matthew Stafford and based on a report from Vinny Bonsignore of the Last Vegas Review-Journal, Stafford’s ski partner and the decision-makers in Las Vegas could have had him if they had upped their offer to the Rams.

“[The] Raiders showed some discipline by not budging on holding onto pick No. 6. Things would look different right now had they been okay with moving that pick to get Stafford,” Bonsignore reported on X on Friday.

“A two this year and next year’s one would have gotten it done. Everyone has their price. The Raiders were unwilling to go that far.”

Based on Bonsignore’s report, it sounds like the Rams were willing to trade Stafford, but in the end, he didn’t actually prefer to be with the Raiders. If Stafford had wanted to go to Las Vegas, he could have easily forced the Rams to deal him by mid-March and would have reportedly received more money if he had taken the Raiders’ offer.

The Athletic’s Vic Tafur believes Stafford left “a lot of money” on the table by returning to the Rams and if that’s the case, it should be a safe assumption the veteran quarterback didn’t want to leave Los Angeles in the first place.

Now, for the second time in two months, the Raiders are facing rejection on the recruiting trail – first with Bears head coach Ben Johnson and now with Stafford. Johnson’s agent all but announced he was using the Raiders as leverage against the Bears, and there’s still a lot we don’t know about what went on behind the scenes with Stafford and the Rams.

In the context of Bonsignore’s report, it sounds like the Rams were willing to trade Stafford if the compensation was better, but a lot about how the situation played out feels similar to what happened with Johnson and the Raiders.

The Rams allowed Stafford to go out and find a better deal. He found a better deal (and maybe two), took it to the Rams, and then re-signed with the Rams after a short conversation with the team on Friday morning.

Same story. Different characters. Exact same outcome of someone choosing a team over the Raiders for less money.

Brady and company will now shift their focus to a quarterback other than Stafford and, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the latest wish list isn’t particularly exciting.

Adam Schefter on X (formerly Twitter): “With Matthew Stafford remaining with the Rams, the Las Vegas Raiders now are expected to investigate veteran quarterback options that include Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Sam Darnold, per sources. pic.twitter.com/9RUGIZy5g9 / X”

  1. A two this year and a one the next are too much. I’m glad this collapsed. Let’s improve in the draft. We can take a QB in the second round. Other teams are desperate for OL and defensive help, not to mention WRs. We need to build, not sacrifice picks. There will be good choices in round two to challenge Aidan. Plus if Aidan has a superior RB, the playbook opens up. Next year does not have to be lost.

  2. SO very glad that management didn’t give in to the Rams outrageous demands for this long in the tooth QB. If they don’t find a QB to draft, I hope they just sign a bridge QB and use our draft capital to build up other positions of need like WR1, OL, RB, LB, CB, and Safety. If we build a solid all around team we can win with a lesser talent at QB.

  3. Stafford, is to old why pay so much money and inone year were back in the same problem. My thinking is get the number one running back and then Will Howard.

  4. I wanted Stafford, but not at the price that is being reported. As I wrote earlier, I felt all along this was Stafford’s agent drumming up attention, much like Ben Johnson’s agent did a month ago. That’s okay, that is their job, we don’t take it personally. The good news here is that the Raiders organization made sound decisions today. Now, don’t spend big money on Darnold, or Rodgers, don’t even call Russ, or Cousins. Marriota is Garoppolo 2.0, he’ll be hurt within 3 weeks. Build the core, draft Dart or Milroe with the 2nd pick , maybe sign Justin Fields, or Zach Wilson let these guys battle it out with O’Connell. flush the other turds

  5. Dodged a bullet.

Thank God we didn’t give up assets to get Stafford.

Stick with O’Connell for year and build the rest of the team out.

    This isn’t rocket science.

    R1 Mike Green Edge Marshall
    R2 Kaleb Johnson Rb Iowa
    Free Agency Mekhi Becton

  6. i don’t think they had a chance Staford was looking for what he is worth and was staying in LA

  7. Dart or Shough. We will be saying, “glad we didn’t get Stafford”, like we said glad we didn’t get Johnson. We need those picks more than we need a rent-a-QB for a few years, though he would have been a nice to have.
