Report: Raiders Rookie CB Damon Arnette Hasn’t Taken “One Step Backwards” in Training Camp

It’s been a while since the Raiders had a promising season outlook at cornerback, but the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vinny Bonsignore says two players who have caught his eye in training camp have been Trayvon Mullen and Damon Arnette.

After last year, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Mullen is having a solid training camp, but what Bonsignore had to say on 920 AM Raider Nation Radio about Arnette’s transition to the NFL might be considered a little more of a pleasant surprise:

“So far when you watch Damon Arnette, the 19th pick overall on one side, and Travon Mullen, the second year player from Clemson, on the other [side] just doing what they do on a daily basis against some pretty good wide receivers, some elite talent that the Raiders have offensively, and not taking one step backwards. Neither one of these guys. I watch Damon Arnette all the time and there hasn’t been one moment when I thought ‘oh, this is a little too big for him, he doesn’t feel comfortable, he’s still finding his way.’ He’s got a swagger about him that says ‘I belong here.’ “

For what it’s worth, Bonsignore hasn’t been the only one singing Arnette’s praises lately. Former All Pro wide receiver Chad Johnson was one of many to point out the impressive technique and effort from Arnette on this play against Henry Ruggs III…

No Title

Ok Damon Arnette.. calm down!!! 🔥I was high on Arnette. Had him CB5 in my class. I didn’t care about the 4.57 40 or short arms. His film was terrific. Textbook technique vs 4.2 speed Ruggs. Didn’t fall for the half step. Extremely impressive. 🎥: @I_Am_OD3 pic.twitter.com/HzcsU5aPg5

Sure looks like a first-round pick, no?

Truth be told, though, no one would have been disappointed if Ruggs III had pulled away in a sprint. In fact, it’s a little surprising that he didn’t.

  1. Just another testament to mayock,Gruden and their new and improved scouting department. We wasted years of drafts with reggie in charge.it makes wonder what the interview process was like before mayock. Mark Davis saved this historic organization when he hired Gruden!

  2. Arnette is heading to pro bowl rookie year and could even be an all pro like JC Jackson was for Pats 2 years ago as UDFA

  3. Ruggs never turned on his jets or fought for the ball because this is a DB drill. Not a one on one.

  4. Everyone looks great in practice on every team! Let’s hope it stays that way for The Raiders when the games count! Especially the defense, because if there’s a major improvement on that side of the ball then this team will be playoff bound! #RN4L

  5. cars 2 slow and a delivery DB have plenty of time to get underneath the ball what’s going to happen when it goes up against other people’s defense He’s throwing the ball too late Henry’s too fast for him car needs to step it up and that are get rid of him and get somebody else in there that can deliver the long ball That’s going to be a problem he did it last year He’s still gun shy

  6. Clowney I feel like he a better pick to pick up center playing field and rushing.

  7. He didn’t pull away because the ball was under thrown, and Armette had that left arm bar out there to keep him from going by. Ruggs next step will be to fight through it.
