Christian Wilkins has made more headlines in four days as a free agent than he did in 16 months with the Raiders and the off-field stories around Wilkins have unfortunately been getting more bizarre by the day.
Once upon a time, it was Wilkins’ foot that everyone was talking about and based on a report on Monday, there were a lot of bad guesses about the foot.
According to Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer, Wilkins didn’t suffer a setback to the previous injury, but instead re-injured the foot in close proximity to the previous injury.
“Through Wilkins’s rehab process, another injury in the same area of his foot occurred, and that slowed his return from the Jones fracture,” Breer reported on Monday. “The Jones fracture has improved, but the second injury prevented a return, and doctors determined that the only way to address that injury was for Wilkins to undergo another surgery.”
Details around Wilkins’ release have been hard to come by in recent days, and a lot of that probably has to do with the legal situation looming between Wilkins and the Raiders.
It also sounds like some of the rumors being passed around in private aren’t stories that anyone wants to attach to their name.
Chat Sports Raiders Report host Mitchell Renz was the first to report on Wilkins refusing to have a second medical procedure on his foot and Renz has been following the latest situation closely.
Renz said he has heard there are legal reasons keeping the Wilkins’ story out of the public eye, but a quote he shared on Monday’s show might have been the most disturbing so far.
Renz said an anonymous source told him that whatever Wilkins was allegedly involved in is “an impossible thing to ever go public with.”
Given the nature of the most recent allegations involving Wilkins, it sounds like the “bigger” story is moving in a direction that might not be particularly comfortable for anyone to discuss.
A lot of Wilkins’ behaviors have been written off as immaturity over the course of his career, but some of the odd situations go all the way back to college.
It’s unclear if the latest rumors around Wilkins might have contributed to his release, but the more details that come out, the more it feels like they probably played a role.
Another head case, Raiders really need to start doing their “due diligence” with these free agents. I can’t imagine how much money we have wasted with these pickups over the years with players and coaches.
This dude has a history of questionable behavior. He’s a toucher allegedly or not allegedly I have seen the videos,! Anyone trying to blame the Raiders are justifying this guy’s behavior as boys being boys and shaming or trying to shame the victim need to be fired! Florio
