Report: Teams Trying To Trade For Khalil Mack Being “Quickly Met With A No”

It’s been the headline of the Raiders offseason and in a couple weeks, it could be the headline of the regular season.

Is Khalil Mack getting a new deal and what is Reggie McKenzie telling other GMs interested in trading for Mack?

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, McKenzie’s answer has been a firm “no” on all trade proposals. From his MMQB column on Monday, Breer wrote this about any potential trade regarding Mack:

“There’s not much of a chance that another team would give up pick-wise what it would take to get Mack without some sort of assurance that he’d be doing a long-term deal in his new home. And you can raise the fact that the franchise tag would be an option for that team, but that assumes Mack would report to a new home without a new deal, which seems unlikely.

Is there a team out there willing to give up a first-round pick (and maybe another pick), plus more than $20 million per year, with $60 million or so fully guaranteed, to get Mack? Maybe there is. He’s an incredible player, but that’s a hefty price for anyone who doesn’t play quarterback. For now the discussion is moot, as I understand it. Inquiries about Mack’s availability from other NFL outposts have been quickly met with a no.”

As for Mack’s status with the Raiders, NBC Sports’ Peter King says the Raiders aren’t particularly worried about their All Pro defender missing regular season games:

“There’s a lot of sentimental inside the Raiders that Khalil Mack will probably not hold out into the season. They think that even if they don’t reach a contract agreement with him that Mack most likely will be [back with the team] for opening day.”

  1. “It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business.” And Sonny got whacked.

This is business. It’s also BS to treat your other franchise player this way. The Raiders finally have a home grown All Pro talent like Mack and can’t show him the respect he deserves by paying the man what he deserves. I’ve read all the approaches to this dilemma, franchise tag after franchise tag, trade him, wait and see what another player gets. It may be business but it sure smells bad to Raider Nation Mr. Davis. I agree with another talking head that if you can’t afford to pay for the likes of a Mack, maybe you need a partner with deeper pockets than your own. Defensive players of this caliber don’t come along very often.

    1. These articles are crap. First of all your not going to get Mack for a 1st rounder or 2 first if they arent in the top 12. You are never going to find someone o9f his skill level. You would have to get a high first and a young all pro at a position of need.

    2. Youre a moron. Mack signed his contract. Raiders extended Carr first because the fifth year option meant Mack would still be under contract. You cant just sign all your guys to 100 million dollar contracts without a plan. And this plan was obvious before they signed Carr. There were as many articles about this going down exactly this way as there are articles now questioning it. Sign Carr cuz they had the 5th year option for Mack and could tag him if need be the next season. Davis owns an NFL franchise. To think he cant afford to sign a player is asinine. Any bank would trip over their feet to loan him money if he needed it. You dont have even the slightest grasp of the business side of the NFL.

      1. Rather what we we’re told was, we weren’t going after top tier free agent talent because we needed to be in a position to sign Carr, Mack and Amari. They signed Carr first because he was a second round pick and didn’t have a 5th yr option. The understanding seemed to be; at least if you listen to what both McKenzie and Davis we’re saying. Mack would be signed just like Carr and Gabe Jackson we’re signed prior to camp this year. No you can’t give everyone $100 million dollar contracts. You also can’t tell me that any compensation be it picks or players, justifies losing your best player and generational talent like Mack.

      2. I’m so glad somebody else is saying this. For people to think that this wasn’t all foreseen and planned is ridiculous. There is a reason that neither side is coming out saying anything inflammatory about the other side. They all know the business side of this and I hate that it just gets blown out of proportion by media and their blind followers. The Raiders know what they have in Mack and he knows where they are coming from. He will show up regular season, he will get paid and finally this media inspired drama will be over.

    3. Mark Davis’ pockets have nothing to do with salary cap. It’s not that they don’t have the money it’s that they’re not allowed to pay that money without hurting the rest of the team due to salary cap restraints

    4. It’s not what’s in your pockets it’s whats left in your salary cap! Go look for yourself then tell us all what you would be willing to pay.

  2. It always amazes me how quick people are to spend other peoples money. Raiders do not want to set this market. Blueprint for this is the way Rams handled Donald last year. Both deals will get done eventually.

  3. Kahlil Mack is getting the franchise tag, plain and simple. If Kahlil Mack wants to win a Super Bowl, he will not make his franchise pay money they simply cannot afford, at least right now. The Raiders do not have the money to pay Mack right at this moment. How is this so hard for people to figure out. Yes, Kahlil Mack deserves to be the highest paid non-quarterback player in the league. But he will have to simply wait anot hn er year or possibly even two. But he won’t be taking home exactly peanuts while he’s waiting. He will make nearly $14 million dollars this year and nearly $20 million dollars next year. I think he can love off that, right? He won’t go hungry or be unable to pay his electric bill. Like some people I know including myself. The Raiders must let know Mack know that they cant afford to pay him right now because of the new contracts given out to turn this team into a Super Bowl contender. Gruden’s, Carr’s, Gabe Jackson’s and a host of awesome, smart signings to change the culture of the silver & black have caused this Mack contract dilemma. Mack, the Raiders know your the best in the league. The Raiders are not going to trade you. The Raiders will pay you what you deserve. When they can. They can & will. And hopefully the market will continue to increase over the next 12 to 24 months for a player of your calibur and position. And come 12 to 24 months from now, you will get a BIGGER contract than you would have got signing one today. I understand the injury risk, but this is tackle football baby. It’s been around a very long time with hundreds of thousands of players taking the field over the history of the sport, and every single one of them having the same risk of injury on any given Sunday. Bottom line, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out. Mack will report to the Raiders a few days before the opener. He will make $14 million dollars this year which is 5-6 million under what he is worth. The Raiders will compete. They may even be super bowl contenders. And the Raiders will reward their best player with even more money for being patient and not being a money hungry scum bucket. Money is the root of all evil. And it DOES NOT bring anybody happiness. As a matter of fact, more money more problems. These things are said not to make jokes, they are said because they are true. As Mack’s agent, I am a dumbass for convincing Mack that the Raiders have the money to pay him this year. Once he understands that I am a filthy liar who prey on hundred dear Bill’s and care less about Kahilil Mack or anything but money. Mack will be happy. He will continue to thrive. And he will be doing the right thing by not putting the franchise who believes in him and who knows he is our top dog, in a situation where they cannot buy toilet paper for the team because of the highest contracts signed by a handful of the best players on the team. Hang tough Mack. There is no need for you to show up to training camp or the preseason without a contract and risk getting hurt before the season starts. But come the first week of the regular season, come in shape and ready to release all hell on opposing quarterbacks on your way to your 2nd Defensive Player of the Year award. Because they Raiders have now given you exactly what you needed to win the award every year for the next however many years…..an inside pass rush from a plethora of bad *** defensive tackles (Hurst, Hill, Caradene, Rucker). And also another force on the opposite side in Arden key.

    1. Owners making Billions.

Mack or any other player in the league wants security. Profootball careers are short. One major injury and that is the end of your career. 14 Million isnt chump change, but smart players amd people plan ahead. They are looking at the big picture and need security in their profession just in case a career ending injury happens.

Do what is best for you Mack. These fans have no idea how hard you worked all your life for this opportunity. Make the best of it and good luck.

Raider Nation is behind you 100%.

  4. Not a single beat writer, nor fan knows for sure what the Raiders or Mack are thinking, and so it’s speculation at best. My guess is that the Raiders were well aware of this contract negotiation prior to this season, and it’s not about not wanting to pay him. It’s likely, they are figuring out how to pay him a record contract…the nuts and bolts of the deal. Everyone knows Mack is going to get Donald, Miller, Suh money or more. Mr. Davis and Reggie are trying to figure out how to finance such a big deal. Front end, back end, guarantees, deferring, etc. If that’s not the case, then the Davis & Reggie don’t deserve to be in their positions. To let a potential HOF player go is unthinkable, and I can’t imagine any other NFL owner letting that happen. We’ll see.

  5. Listen every1 while i support the fact that i believe Mack should already have new contract n deserves money i want 2 know if there is an NFL player that believes in honoring n fulfilling agreement they executed in good faith? Also, are NFL players going 2 return/renegotiate there agreements if they have sub-par season? Now some restructure deals in order 2 allow new players but thats different than giving money back. These players need 2 think about performance bonus provisions n incentives not breach agreements n display bad faiyh. Why is it disrespectful 4 owners to expect players 2 report timely n honor their legally binding agreements. And if players expect n demand incentives, bonuses, n new contracts then they should expect that money come back 2 owners if they do not meet certain performance criterias. Raiders r not being disrespectful especially when there is contract in place n every1 understands its a business

  6. If all Americans handled negotiating raises like these NFL players do then we’d be overthrown by Russia within a week

  7. Fans and sportswriters know nothing, so we have to fill in the blanks with speculation. The only detail I believe here is that the Raiders are not going to trade Mack.

It’s entirely possible that the two sides have a framework in place since February, but can’t sign Mack until they actually put the guaranteed money in the escrow account. The Raiders could be short of having enough until the 177 million in TV money is distributed in week 1 to all 32 teams.

I’m not worried, and the fact that we have not heard any bad noise in the media from the two sides tells me that there is no real distress.
I continue to feel everything is just fine.

  8. Check the author of any post or article that writes “Raiders trading Mack”. Every one of them is a beat writer for a team that wants him. Trying to start articles to produce momentum that will never happen. I’ve seen “top odds to land Mack” with packers at the top…written by packers beat writer. Also seen “best odds to land Mack” with cowboys at the top…written by cowboys beat writer. It’s comical how lesser writers try to manipulate (too strong of a word for what thy are attempting) the media.

  12. Stop it with the PR. Both side’s need 2 tighten up. Raiders have a high caliber weapon pay the man. Mack your still under contract play it out. Both sides are cut throating eachother. 2 me it looks like Mr. Agent is trying harder 2 line his pockets no matter the out come.
