Teammate Thinks Raiders’ 3rd-Round Pick would Thrive with Scheme Adjustment

It’s been a rookie season of ups-and-downs for Raiders’ third-round cornerback Darien Porter, and week 15 turned out to be one of the downs.

Porter’s Pro Football Focus grade on Sunday in Philadelphia ended up being his worst of the year (29.3).

On the season, Porter has played well in stretches and some have suggested he might be out of his element a little in Pete Carroll’s heavy Cover 3 defensive scheme.

One of those who would like to see Porter utilized a little differently is the Raiders’ other starting cornerback.

I feel like he’d be a man-to-man corner,” Eric Stokes told Silver & Black Sports Network’s Jesse Merrick.

“He likes to get up in your face, and he can run with you, at the end of the day, and it’s hard to run by him, so if he can transition, I think he’d be a great man-to-man corner. If you could get him to play man, he’s a great person.”

To this point in the season, no team in the NFL plays a lower percentage of man coverage than the Raiders (13 percent), and that dynamic isn’t likely to change with Pete Carroll on the sideline.

Two weeks ago, Carroll was asked why he still leans so heavily on Cover 3 concepts, and he said the defense was trying to get back to some of the basics.

“There’s still a good amount of Cover 3 played around the league,” Carroll said.

“We’re just trying to get really good at some basics and some things that we really count on. We mix our variety of things throughout. We don’t want to be really predictable, but yet we also want them to have to beat us. So we’re trying to learn how to play that way.”

  1. I hope pete has no control over roster decisions anymore he would trade Porter b’cuz he doesn’t fit in his ancient system playing guy’s out of position should blitz White & Adams more or allow PG to work it in his scheme they should load the line up & just send the house sometimes I CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL PETE IS GONE there isn’t one bright spot under his leadership all 3 phases of this team have regressed & are playing terrible uninspired football

    1. Same mistake made like when they hired Gruden, hiring an outdated coach. Seattle is doing really well with their young HC.

  2. Here is a scenario:
1st Round pick QB’s are a crapshoot. one needs to wait at least 3 years before it is known whether or not you have a star or a backup. If it could work, trade No.1 pick to Rams for 2 firsts, then trade to Bengals for Joe Burrow. Burrow is a known entity Hire Chris Shula & Brian Daboll, then beef up OL with maulers, use draft and FA to shore up linebackers and edge. Ask Brady and Mark to go on a long vacation with no phones.
