Report: Tom Brady was “Big Advocate” for Bringing Chip Kelly to the Raiders

The closer we move closer to the offseason, look for Tom Brady to become one of the dominant storylines around the Raiders.

The more we learn about Pete Carroll’s first year as head coach of the Raiders (and potentially his last), it sounds like Brady has been in the middle of everything – even down to the hiring of Carroll’s staff in the case of former offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.

Several reports in the last week have connected Kelly to Brady and the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vinny Bonsignore went as far as to say Kelly was probably “the last name that [Carroll] ever brought up” as a potential coordinator on his staff.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini referred to Brady as a “big advocate” for bringing Kelly to the Raiders 10 months ago and added that Brady’s disappointments this year go beyond the offense.

“I’m told minority owner Tom Brady was a big advocate of bringing in Kelly to run the offense, and he has shared with some people close to him his disappointment in the team’s overall performance. His frustrations go beyond the offense, too,” Russini reported on Wednesday.

The Raiders have played poorly in every facet of the game this year, and it’s hard not to take Russini’s reference to Brady’s frustrations going “beyond the offense” as a statement on Carroll.

Considering the Raiders already need to find two new coordinators in the offseason, and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham could also be on his way out, there is a convenient path developing towards overhauling the coaching staff, including the head coach.

Brady has been successful at nearly everything he has been a part of in his football career, but his resume as a de facto president of football operations in Las Vegas has taken a hit in the last year.

Even going back to before he was part of the Raiders in an official capacity, it’s widely believed that Brady influenced owner Mark Davis to hire his friend Josh McDaniels in 2022.

The good news for Brady, and anyone else making decisions in the organization, is that they are in line for a top draft pick and should enter the offseason with as much salary cap room as any team in the league.

It’s a sentiment that tends to be tossed around every year, but the 2026 offseason feels like it’s going to be the most pivotal offseason the team has entered into in decades.

  2. Good to know. Does that mean that now we can fire Brady so he can hang out with Chip in the golf course?

    1. Brady isn’t an employee, he’s part owner so he can only be relieved of his duty as top shot caller. If this article is true and Brady did push for the McDaniels hire, Davis is much more dimwitted than we think. After vouching for such a disastrous regime why would he give Brady control of football operations???
