Damon Arnette wasn’t expected by many to be drafted in the first round. You’ll be hard pressed to find any mock drafts that predicted it to happen.
He was not considered the best cornerback on his college team and Arnette seemed to solidify his stock as a day-two pick when he ran a 4.56 at the NFL combine.
Predictably, the Raiders took criticism for drafting Arnette in the first round, but the good news is that he’s reportedly been having a solid training camp. Not only has Arnette shown good technique, as former Bengals WR Chad Johnson pointed out on Twitter, he also has proven he can run with one of the fastest players in the NFL.

The regular season is still a few weeks away, but the Raiders hope is to start Arnette from day 1. We already knew he was physical, but if he has the speed to run with Henry Ruggs III, then the Raiders have even more to feel good about.
Assuming he will start week 1 against Carolina, Arnette can look forward to lining up across from D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson catching passes from Teddy Bridgewater. Not the toughest matchup he’ll face all year, but hardly a pushover, either.
