Are the Raiders Now Committed to Derek Carr?

It’s been a whirlwind around the Raiders and their quarterback situation over the past couple months. News and fake news have been around every corner.

If you have been confused by all the speculation just get in line with everyone else.

With that in mind, let’s take a best guess at what really was going on between the Raiders and Derek Carr and figure out where the Raiders are headed now that Tom Brady is apparently headed to the Buccaneers.

Were the Raiders really chasing Brady?

It seems obvious that they were poking around, but the extent of that poking around seems to have been embellished a little… or even a lot. Brady’s agent has been working overtime since January, but when it came time for Brady to make a decision (the last week or so), it was no coincidence that the Raiders were never considered one of the favorites.

Were the Raiders looking to replace Carr?

The public support from Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock hasn’t been there like it was a year ago, but the Raiders definitely don’t view Carr as a piece that needs to be replaced. If that was the case, they would have replaced him. There were plenty of options out there that Gruden could have talked himself into.

With that in mind… it was remarkable how many seasoned NFL minds were talking about Gruden bringing in Jameis Winston. Have these ding dongs been hiding under a rock since 1998?

Are the Raiders committed to Carr?

You can probably count on one hand the number of teams that would under no circumstances be shopping for a quarterback a year from now. The Chiefs, Texans, Ravens, Packers, and Seahawks are about it. A few teams (like the Titans and Vikings) are financially tied to their quarterbacks, but that isn’t the case with the Raiders.

At this point maybe the best way to put it is this: The Raiders aren’t ready to see what Carr would do in another uniform with a solid supporting cast around him (a big year elsewhere would greatly tarnish Gruden’s reputation as a QB guru). Gruden will be hellbent over the next several weeks to add playmakers at wide receiver. He’s letting Mayock have his fun on defense in free agency, but you already know Gruden is thinking about hijacking both of those first-round picks in a month.

Why have the numbers not been reported on Marcus Mariota’s contract?

Who knows. But one guess is that they paid him a good amount and the optics wouldn’t have been great to have their big splash on day one of free agency be a backup quarterback.

Could the Raiders still draft a quarterback next month?

Sure. But don’t expect it to happen in the first three rounds. Plan ‘B’ is now Mariota and Gruden has a special place in his heart for Nathan Peterman. The quarterback room has become full, but that shouldn’t stop Gruden from signing 18 more veteran quarterbacks between now and September.

Is Tom Brady still a good quarterback?

No.

And one final note. If you listed a dozen teams to watch on Brady, you don’t get credit for predicting where he signs.

Furthermore, if you are Jason La Canfora, you are the worst NFL insider in all the land.

  1. B+ work went to an A++++ by CORRECTLY identifying Jason Liar Liar as the worst nfl insider in all the land!!!🔥

  2. Glad we don’t need to hear any more crap about tom going to the Raiders never wanted him…IAM very happy with D.C

  3. Stop it just stop it Gruden is no QB guru. As a QB specialist 4 ESPN he rated QB’s such as Manziel as superior rarely getting anything correct. Gruden has NEVER EVER drafted a QB and nurtured him into a great QB. He has always sought out or coached veteran QB’s except young Simms who Gruden treated like dirt despite the fact that he was not a bad QB.

Im tired of you people in media singing unworthy praise and crediting someone for things they never did or traits they do not and never possessed

  4. Despite your prolonged article to get to the point and what I’ve been saying all along, simply put there was no better option, statistically (which is the most important) better than Carr and that includes Brady. Sure there we’re equals but clear cut better, no! So why in essence start all over with another QB, including the GOAT!? As for Marcus Mariota, I and I’m sure more importantly, Carr welcomes the challenge? Carr is leading the Las Vegas Raiders to the playoffs this year! #CARR2020

  5. The offensive line is the best that it has been in years. The offense also has a legitimate running back and a stud for a tight end and two reasonable backups, one a proven veteran and the other one young with unknown potential. Some people even believe that the offense has a good fit at the slot receiver and full back positions. With that being said, the wide receiver and quarterback positions are the only two positions in need of being solidified. It is almost assured that this team will address the wide receiver position in this year’s draft. With an up and coming Nathan Peterman being groomed for his inevitable backup quarterback position, the question becomes can this team afford two starting quarterbacks. Certainly, the savings accrued by releasing one would be tremendous. The only remaining question is, which one and when?

  6. I for one am happy as hell, that this Brady BS is over. It will be nice to watch as this season unfolds. I want to see if he can learn a new system and succeed. Everyone knows he hates getting hit…..

  7. DEREK IS A GOOD QB GRUDEN SAID WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO DO ” WE LIKE OUR QUARTER BACK” SO ALL YOU WHO TRY TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES READ WHAT HE SAID IE WERE GOOD AT THAT POSITION . I LIKE MARIOTA FOR A BACK UP IF CARR GETS HURT. WHEN WE PLAYED THE TITANS CARR ALWAYS OUT PREFORMED MARIOTA SO LET IT GO #4 IS OUR GUY…

  8. I think if they add at least one of WR that can get open and then actually catch the ball consistently that Carr can return to form. I also think that with two QB’s and one being very mobile that Gruden can run some plays similar to what New Orleans does with Taysom Hill. Id like to see them also bring back Dion Jordan, and Worley if the cost was right. Id hate to give up on Worley this soon only to see him flourish somewhere else.

  9. I still say to trade DC for a 2021 1st round pick, then bundle next year to go UP & fetch Trevor Lawrence of Clemson. On day 1, he will be substantially better than DC.

  10. Before free agency starts, there is always a great deal of speculation. Some so called writers make up stories because they don’t know what else to write about, and because they are not held accountable for the rumors they start. All they have to say is an N.F.L. executive said something, or someone close to someone said something, and they can spew any garbage they like.

  11. I am all in on what the Raiders bringing in Marcus Mariota … He is so much better than having 3 guys ride the bench costing the team truly dead money … Marcus can come in to provide a spark … cover an injury … or run some type of alternative offence … as a change of pace …much like., Hill., with the Saints …. I hope to see both Carr and Mariota play in games this next year … What’s the Team active roster limit now 59 ? play them all … get your moneys worth ! … Its called Depth !
