Derek Carr knows what it’s like to lose a veteran player at the front end of a roster rebuild and he shared his thoughts on the Raiders’ decision to trade Jakobi Meyers on Tuesday.
“I told you this was going to happen last week,” Carr said on the Home Grown with David & Derek Carr. “Jakobi can be a No. 1 target guy. You can throw him the ball, he’s going to be open. He can play every down, he can play the slot, he can play outside.”
“It’s definitely a need for the Jaguars, so this is definitely going to help them. As a Raider, man, I just wish it would have worked out because I don’t like getting rid of good players. That’s tough. That’s tough for Maxx, too. As one of the older players, as a captain, you see a good player leave your building it’s never a good feeling.”
Crosby hasn’t talked publicly about the Meyers trade, but he had to know it was a possibility and according to reports, Crosby did not want to be traded prior to the November 4 trade deadline.
There were reports that a few others in Las Vegas were potentially on the trade block, but the Meyers deal was the only move the Raiders made prior to the deadline.
The decision to trade Meyers might hurt the Raiders in the short term, but it was pretty well understood that he wasn’t going to re-sign in Las Vegas after the season.
Getting a fourth and sixth-round pick for him was probably a best-case scenario and GM John Spytek now has a couple more opportunities to build the roster on draft day.
I hope… If the first SpyTek draft is any indication not so good to have picks over good vets. This regime in its first year either doesn’t pick well or the coaches don’t know how to use them properly. As always Time will Tell
I think that they picked some good players in the draft. I think that their usage of said players is questionable at times. I think what we have seen with Ashton Jeanty has been a good example of this.
The last several weeks they’ve opened up his use in the passing game and gotten him into open field. He is at his best in the open field, making guys miss. His numbers have been significantly better since making that change.
The jury is still out on Thornton and Bech for me because I don’t think we’ve seen enough of them to know for sure how good they are at the NFL level. Both guys certainly have talent, but I can’t judge how well that talent translates to the NFL until I see them in action in a live game setting more.
