Derek Carr Offers Chip Kelly a Suggestion as the Raiders Prepare for the Chiefs

The Raiders have reached a pivotal point in the season, and it feels like Sunday’s game in Kansas City could lock the trajectory of the 2025 season.

There have been rumors of some uneasiness in the Raiders’ locker room and veteran linebacker Jamal Adams admitted last week to questioning some things during the team’s four-game losing streak.

A win over the Chiefs, who have won 3 of their last 4 games, would be huge for morale in Pete Carroll’s first season with the Raiders. A loss would drop the Raiders to a 2-5 record and probably stir up some of the rumors that have been creeping to the surface for the last few weeks.

Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has demonstrated the ability to slow down Chiefs’ offense, but what can the Raiders’ struggling offense do to make a statement on the road against one of the best defensive coordinators in the league?

Former Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr brought up an idea this week.

Carr thinks offensive coordinator Chip Kelly should return to his roots and bring back some of the fast-tempo concepts he was known for at the University of Oregon and the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I love Chip Kelly, he still has it in him. He still has the turbo warp-speed [offense]. That’s who he is. He can go there any time and what better week to do it than the Kansas City Chiefs?” Carr said on the Home Grown podcast with his brother, David.

“I understand keeping that offense off the field, but I also understand when you play the Chiefs, the mindset to beat the Chiefs is not keep them off the field, the mindset is score points. You’ve got to throw the ball down the field, you’ve got to run in efficiently, but you’ve got to score points,” Derek continued.

“If you slow the game down… it sounds good until you’re down 14-0 and then your whole game plan is gone. You’ve got to score. Yes, you have to run the ball, you have to double team [Chris Jones], you’ve got to get completions, but you’ve got to score points.

In theory, Carr’s idea seems like a good one, but it’s been a challenge for the offense to execute anything in Kelly’s first season in Las Vegas.

Additionally, Carroll essentially called out Kelly last week for getting away from some of the ground-and-pound concepts the 74-year-old head coach was known for in Seattle.

But if there was ever a time to go out and do something different than anything the offense has shown all year, this would be the week to do it.

  1. That,,, Sounds like a Plan and could catch the Queefs unprepared… anything to get away from what we have been doing so far. And a High Tempo offense would gas Chris Jones and his Merry Men…

  2. Still a shame that McDaniels decided to move away from the best QB since Rich Gannon in the process ruining the D.Adams trade but someone needed to be the scapegoat for the defense blowing so many 4th quarter double digit leads. Of course scoring points would be great and fast tempo would definitely throw Spags for a loop however the O-Line would be needed to play unlike how they’ve played all year and Geno would have to make a quick read over and over which is something he’s not shown he can’t do.

    1. Exactly, we didn’t deserve Derek Carr. Carr is more qualified to be part time owner than dumb a$$ Brady

  3. Today’s game K.C. 31, LV 0. Bad offense, bad defense, bad coaching. To steal a line from Charles Barkley when he played in Philly, “Bad team, man. We got a bad fucking team.”

    1. Nation, I don’t see the Raiders being favored the rest of the way. I know there is a lot of football to play and injuries can change game situations. Maybe the home games against the Jags & Browns, but I don’t think we would beat those teams with this roster. If Myers gets traded, and Bowers is less than 100%, #2 will be rendered useless with a ragtag line and constant passing situations.
