Report Offers New Details around Death of Former Raiders Running Back Doug Martin

TMZ was the first to report that former Buccaneers and Raiders running back Doug Martin had passed away, and as of Sunday afternoon there were no additional details available.

Later in the evening, FOX KTVU reported on a series of incidents leading up to Martin’s death, including some level of interaction between Martin and members of law enforcement who were called to the home where he was found.

Per the local report, there was a “medical emergency” called in during the early hours of the morning on Sunday, and Martin was eventually detained by police…

Officers were called about 4:15 a.m. on Saturday to a home in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street on reports of the break-in at the same time the department received reports of a person “experiencing a medical emergency” at the same location, the OPD told KTVU. The department said officers found the suspect – later identified as Martin – inside. However, when they tried to detain him, he allegedly briefly resisted.

OPD officers managed to take him into custody, where he became unresponsive and was taken by paramedics to a hospital. The OPD did not specify why Martin had been taken into custody.

The nature of Martin’s medical emergency was not known, and the OPD said its Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Bureau, as well as the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will be conducting an investigation into his death. The officers who were involved in the arrest leading up to the death were placed on paid administrative leave.

The Oakland Police Department also issued a statement suggesting Martin may have already been injured when they arrived at the home…

“Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital.”

Martin played only season with the Raiders (2018) and led the team in rushing yards that year with 723.

Martin was re-signed by the Raiders in 2019 but ended up on injured reserve before the start of the season and was released with an injury settlement.

Martin was born in Oakland, California; not far from where he passed away. He attended St. Mary’s High School and rushed for 3.431 yards in four seasons at Boise State before being drafted by the Buccaneers with the 31st-overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
