Derek Carr’s best quality as a quarterback?
His brother, David, says he knows what it is.
“It’s no secret now. Every play is an opportunity for Derek to get [the offense] into the right play,” David Carr said Thursday on the Minus Three with Shek and Schwartz podcast. “Because it’s so hard to guess as an offensive coordinator what kind of defense they are going to be in. The good ones try to do it and you’re only right about half the time. Maybe.”
“Honestly, Derek’s best quality is his ability to see what the defense is in, the structure, and know exactly what they are playing. And Jon [Gruden] has figured that out and now he just gets him to the line of scrimmage, gives him an option of two or three plays, and honestly the entire playbook is at his disposal.”
Carr has been the center of trade rumors again this year, but the Raiders have reportedly been telling teams he isn’t available. The 2020 season was arguably the best year of Carr’s career and it doesn’t sound like Gruden is interested in starting over at quarterback anytime soon.
If there is a team still trying to trade for Carr, it might be the Bears. With a GM and head coach firmly on the hot seat, the Bears have no choice but to be aggressive in their quarterback search.
If not Carr, could the Bears eventually settle for a consolation prize like Marcus Mariota?

When these Carr haters come around every year and name this QB or that one, I am first to tell them you have no clue what you’re talking about, and in this article you state my case perfectly! Anyone with any sense of football knowledge knows you don’t get rid of a QB that thrives in your system to get another QB, no matter how good they are and have to start the process all over again! Derek Carr is a good QB. I don’t think I have heard or seen a lot of people say otherwise. And yes you could argue that the dismal defense is to blame for some of the Raiders woes. Some but not all!! Derek has a great football mind. That being said though has not translated to WINS!! Fair or Unfair he doesn’t win many games for the team. I have seen him fumble two or three wins away out of bounds near the goal line. He has a losing record as the starting QB. Only one (1) winning season in 7 or 8 seasons. Payton Manning was also a great QB who lead with his mind and skill but had Tom Brady in his way. I don’t think anyone is saying he is a bad QB but the Raiders don’t win with him under center. Every since 84, when the Bears kicked our butts and took our mystic, the Raiders have never been the same team. We used to be the big bullies and would kick butt and take names but not anymore. Our defense is terrible so the spotlight is on the QB even more and Derek Carr is right in it. You have to WIN in this league or you’re done.
I was never a Carr fan. Until this year. What I see is a competitor! He does everything he possibly can to be better. I believe he can be great. But I agree with everyone else. Not with this Defence.
I think the D is more to blame than just “SOME” they are 75% to blame. They cant stop anyone as proven in the KC game. Losing with seconds on the clock.
DC and the offense shouldn’t have to put up 40 points every Sunday. We should have made better picks last 2 years. We seem to always take offense high up. We took Ferrell over White. They have got to start developing talent. I keep seeing D guys playing pretty well for other teams. Still looking for a safety after letting Joseph go 3 years ago just when he was figuring it out.
If the Raiders are going to keep Gruden then we better keep Carr. If you listen to Carr speak, you begin to hear Gruden. He uses many of the same phrases and common cantor. They are rubbing off on eachother. I’m sure no other quarterback would run Gruden’s offense better than Gruden Jr.. The bone head plays that cost the Raiders critical playoff chances, happened mostly on the defense. The same thing happened to the Bengals with all their bone head plays during Paul Guenther’s watch. Continuity is the word Gruden uses and so this is the year the Raiders not only make the playoffs but win a playoff game.
For real! They love Carr when he’s doing exceedingly well, but he makes one single mistake in 8 weeks and they want him gone…smh. I can’t anymore
Carr is a great QB. Why would the Raiders trade him and take another 3 years teaching a new QB the complex playbook of Grudens. Carr already has it mastered.
Some of my fellow Raider fans are just flat out dumb for blaming Carr for the Raiders not being a playoff team. I stopped arguing with those fools last off-season. You can tell them things like the best defense Carr has had in his seven year carter was ranked 28th. Last year it was ranked 31st. The Raiders offense was ranked 10th overall @ 27.2 ppg. Ranked 6th in first downs. But raked near bottom in possessions because the defense could never get off the field.
I have the same issue, it’s highly disheartening and sad. what happened to the loyalty this great fan base was known for? Where’s the integrity? When did so many become so clueless? I’m tired of defending Carr against other “Raider” fans. I shouldn’t have to…

Defense
Dumb *** because he doesn’t play both sides of the field .
Because he has a defense that can’t stop anything. Imagine playing QB for a team and everything around you keeps changing from coaches and playbooks to players. Leading a top 10 scoring offense, but having a bottom 3 defense every year. Being among the top 3 or 5 QBs to lead 4th quarter comebacks because the defense keeps putting you in a hole. In 2020, 2 games you give us a lead with less than 2 minutes on the clock. The defense allows them to gain big chunk plays to get into field goal range to win. Mariota takes over for a game and like you he takes a last second lead, but again the defense gives up big chunk plays to hand the opponent the win. If the defense did their job you would be 11-5 and in the playoffs. Yet, you get all the blame for the failures of the defense. To blame Carr for that…is flat out ignorant and proves you don’t know Jack.

I have watched both Carr’s since they arrived their freshman seasons to Fresno State.
I have watched Derek improve each year. He is a Raider 100% and will remain a Raider until his retirement. He is one smart quarterback!

Derek Carr is 100% Raider. He has improved each season. He provides the best offensive effort and makes up what the defense fails to provide. We should be happy to have a quality quarterback like Derek Carr.

Once he figures out how to score touchdowns in the Red Zone he will become the quarterback the Raiders are looking for. To many FGs and poorly timed turnovers. This team was -16 in turnovers and near the bottom in defense. Solve those 3 problems they are in the Hunt for the Trophy.
Carr is not an elite QB in any way. Just a bit better than average. He can not put his team on his back and will his team to a win. The Raiders certainly could have a much worse QB.
So meany QBs that start off hot early in their career after a serious injury (broken leg and back) they are never the same player. Carr hasn’t been the same , he is gun shy and its noticeable. He will never take his team anywhere near a SB.

I just laugh every time some foolish sports caster starts talking D.Carr trade, they have no clue about football. Carr is a Raider and the General of Grudens offence, although I think coach needs to change up some plays.
There isn’t anything wrong with carr he’s a very very good/great QB ……….. Our defense sucks carr can only do so much I’m sick and tired of hearing carr this and carr that carr is our QB if we could get a top 10 defence hell even a top 15 we would win games but when we are right at last on defense we can’t win no team can win games like that it’s a team thing not a carr team the whole team has to play our we will never be the team that we once were
Why do you think all the other teams are waning Carr? They know he is a great QB just give him a defense.
