Host Thinks Raiders Could Have Opportunity to Trade for Former 1st-Round Quarterback

The Raiders will be adding a quarterback in the offseason and many believe their best path to a franchise quarterback in the months ahead will come by means of a trade.

One quarterback the Raiders are believed to be interested in is 2023 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, but it isn’t clear yet if the Vikings will consider trading him.

The assumption is that the Vikings will want to re-sign Sam Darnold and if Darnold returns to Minnesota on a long-term deal, at least one NFL media personality believes they will entertain offers for McCarthy.

“If it’s a mega deal for Sam Darnold, then J.J. McCarthy is going to be on the trade market and the going price for J.J. is going to be a first rounder,” Yahoo and FOX Sports host Jason Fitz said this week on Raider Nation Radio’s The Morning Tailgate.

“Every draft pundit I’ve talked to has said pretty squarely that if they were ranking last year’s quarterbacks, J.J. would be ahead of this year’s class,” Fitz continued. “So, J.J., in the eyes of many scouts is actually a better prospect than Cam [Ward] or Shedeur [Sanders],” Fitz continued. “My question is… is one first rounder going to get J.J., or is it going to be a first and something else? And you better know where the health stands on it.”

“But yeah, if they give Donald a long term deal, there’s going to be a bidding war for JJ McCarthy. I’m sure there’s just too many teams that need a quarterback.”

The Vikings have first and fourth-round picks invested in McCarthy and that could be their asking price going forward.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vinny Bonsignore responded to Fitz’s comments and he believes the cost to get McCarthy will not be more than a first round pick.

“I don’t see that it would be a first [round pick] and something else,” Bonsignore said. “And the reason I say that is because you’re taking that fifth year. Now you only have it for four years rather than the full five years. So I think that that one year makes a big difference in terms of what you can get.”

There’s a lot that has to play out before McCarthy can be a trade target for the Raiders or anyone else, but the former Michigan quarterback is still only 21 years old and could end up being a better value than the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft.

  1. The raiders need to either trade up, or trade for JJ McCarthy. The raiders can not afford to go 5-12 or 6-11 under Aiden O’Connell. O’Connell is ranked near the bottom of qb’s, he is a mediocre. I believe he is around 28 or 29 as far as rankings go. And by the way, their are only 32 teams.

  2. JJ was at least as good as the best in last years draft. He’s COMPLETELY better than ANY Q in the upcoming draft. Harbaugh built him into a pro ready Q. And he showed just that until he got hurt. I’ve watched every game of his repeatedly. He’s all that and a bag of chips.

  3. I like the new idea of trading for Jj but I read another draft I liked better. Shadier and Ward will be gone. Trade first round picks with Dallas and get a 2nd round comp. With Dallas 1st pick select Jayden milroe. Now you have 2 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Get your running back and wide receiver. Go get to cornerbacks. Now you have 5 players in three rounds. A lot more players to select from 4 -7 Milroe will get fine tuned by Vrabel. I may want to trade Aiden sorry. Go get a seasoned qb like Fields or Winston. My take about Milroe is that dual threat 4.3 speed. You want to be good in the AFC west you need a runner.

    1. I just puked in my mouth. Did you see your boys bowl game?Lmfao dude is a scrub. He ain’t even T Pryor level scrub.

  4. As long as he’s healthy, I’d do a #1 for McCarthy in a heartbeat, AOC will never be the answer.

But in order to maximize McCarthy we need a competent HC and OC to develop him and accentuate his strengths with the right type of offense.

    1. Agreed. Luke Getsy ruined two good QBs. We cannot let that happen in 25. I’m not ready to give up on AP (see Dan Campbell). We should’ve let Kinsbury write his own check to stay in the building. Neither JJ or anyone else will flourish without a a great OC.
      SO GET THAT HANDLED RAIDERS!
