Insider: Derek Carr “Is Where It Starts” For Any GM Thinking of Joining Raiders

Prior to the season, The Athletic’s Mike Sando surveyed 50 NFL insiders in search of a consensus on the league’s “tiers” at quarterback.

At the time, Derek Carr was the no. 15 quarterback as surveyed by league insiders. But after re-polling those insiders, Sando said Carr has “won over” voters with his play this season.

“I just love the way the guy carries himself and how professional and just how well-spoken he has been through this (Henry) Ruggs stuff and (Jon) Gruden stuff,” a league insider told Sando. “If I am walking in the door as the Raiders’ new GM, I am thinking, ‘This is where it starts — I got the quarterback, and I know I got the guy who is the leader. He can help get this ship right.’”

The Raiders, and everyone else for that matter, have realized in the past month that Carr’s value goes far beyond his play on the field. The organization has dealt with unprecedented drama and tragedy and somehow they are tied for the AFC West lead at the halfway point of the season.

As for a new general manager joining the team, it would make sense to give Mike Mayock a year to operate without being under the thumb of Jon Gruden. The Raiders have made a few questionable picks during Mayock’s tenure with the team, but it is no secret that Gruden was the one ultimately calling the shots.

Though inquiring minds would love to know… was it Mayock or Gruden that carried the torch for drafting Damon Arnette?

  1. Glad to see Carr getting the respect he has always deserved. He has always played at a very high level! What has varied is the supporting cast or the lack thereof around him. No matter who the Raiders have surrounded him with . . Carr has always played hard and has had an excellent attitude and has been an excellent leader of the team! Thank God the Raiders kept him as their QB and team leader!

    1. Let’s play a game of wait and see and reserve judgment until after week 17, because after lasts weeks debacle against the midgets, I’m a bit pessimistic, especially with Derek since his play is the subject of this conversation. Regardless of which side you fall on ,statistics are meaningless unless they’re accompanied by W’s and Derek has a lacking in that department! Let’s review, this is a business regardless of liking the adults playing a game, if you can’t win super bowls, the ultimate goal, then get your bags packed for a new career in the broadcast booth! P.S. whoever that anonymous person who said “if I’m walking in the door as the Raiders new GM I’m thinking this is where it starts, I got a quarterback etc.” I’m thinking he’s got absolutely 0 chance of becoming the Raiders new GM or anyone’s new GM❗

      1. He’s had how many diff coaches and systems to adapt in his career?? He’s a great QB who’s never had real weapons yet puts up numbers where he shouldn’t even be close , how can you be consistent when your teammates who you build a rapport with get traded off …. IMO everyone has one but also think we should of kept del Rio but he got cheated out of a job for gruden.. big mistake .

      2. It is kind of funny. I understand that QBs are measured in wins and losses but, if you have a team that on average scores approximately 30 a game and still loses….. Is that’s to be attributed to the QB or rather the defenses inability to prevent a team from scoring? On top of that. Look at the situation Derek Carr has been in throughout his career. How many coaching changes he has dealt with? He has only had 1 coach that lasted 3 seasons in his career. Not to mention rarely has he had a true #1 receiver to throw to. Yet he has broken just about every Raider QB record and has 2 games where he has thrown 30+ passes over 90 percent composition.
So tell me, is the Raider woes really a Derek Carr issue? His numbers are among the best QBs in the game.

    2. Here is the progression I want to see Carr have with the Raiders. 1st. Couple of SB Wins. 2nd. He retires then spends 1 year as QB coach for the team. Then he becomes H.C. and wins a few more SB’s. Then he is made GM. Then one of his sons becomes our QB.

  2. Take watever poll you want.Carr is a proven failure.Stats dont mean a thing when you cant even get into the post season
Carr is a proven kiss ***

    1. I see that in every issue not yet related to Carr you attack him, that is, it is your simple personal tantrum without objective sustenance.

    2. The Carr haters have been in hiding but they finally came out because he finally had a bad game. The football knowledge of most haters is what real stands out. They think a good QB can win with 10 blocking dummies playing with them and another 11 on defense. QB is critical but they can’t fix everything by themselves. The Raiders are 5-3 so it’s time to get behind each and every one of them. This task is much simpler than player analysis. When we have the ball be quiet. When they have ball raise hell. Simple.

    3. You have no idea what you are talking about. Carr has been the only consistent player on this team since he was drafted. Thank God you aren’t in charge of this team. Carr will prove all you trolls wrong.

    4. How funny!!!
You must be a Matt McGloin guy .. anyone but Carr… Am I right?
A team scores almost 30 points a game and still loses. Ya that’s a QB issue. Raider’s never addressed the defensive problems until this season. Finally the Raiders are almost solid on both sides of the ball.

    5. I agree Carr is probably the best backup quarterback in the NFL. But that’s all and maybe after another year of disappointment all those who think he’s the best thing since sliced bread will finally see. He can make every throw with amazing accuracy, when he wants to. But he doesn’t have what it takes to be a winner. Sure he’ll win you 6-8 games a year, but that ain’t gonna get in the playoffs. As for his amazing stats, most are garbage because the games were already lost when he got em. Garbage stats, the only one that matters is win-loss. Look and tell me how’s he doing there. Another thing is his lame excuses. Excuses only satisfy the ones that make them.

  3. They have built this team around Carr, and guess what he has failed, and will continue too
WHEN will the raiders realize he isn’t the answer, never has been
    Never will b

  4. Carr is a mediocre QB, and although he is a leader he will never carry ghe Raiders to the Superbowl. Carr is way to inconsistent

    1. I’m guessing the people critical of Derek Carr’s play think they’ve learned the game by playing Madden. Lol. They are probably also the same people who crowned Patrick Mahomes the greatest QB we’ve ever seen. How’s that assessment look like this year? Can you say victims of the moment? Find another team and QB to troll. We don’t need you!

  5. I never understood the downgrading of Carr given the chaos of playing for the Raiders. Glad to see him getting much deserved appreciation.

  6. Carr has gotten to much undeserving blame for the woes of the Raiders! Carr has always played at a high level, through all the coaching changes, diva players coming and going, loss of a coach under disgraceful circumstances, the tragedy involving Ruggs and the Arnette nonsense! Carrs numbers never suffered and had the Raiders had a defense like they’ve had this season he would have helped take the Raiders to the playoffs multiple times! Give the man his extension and then get out of his way and let him play football without the other nonsense!! #RN4L

  7. Sorry haters, Carr is what every team would love to have, a leader. You sorry asses can go fly a kite🤣

  8. As much as I like Derek Carr as a person and a player, it’s time to give serious thought to parting ways, unless he takes us to the playoffs this year. Does anyone really think he can lead the Raiders to the Superbowl, let alone win one? Up until now, I’ve always disagreed with his critics, but after both the Giants and Bears games it’s hard to believe it, as the Raiders are beginning to show the same traits they have for the past number of years of falling apart in the second half of the season. I hope it’s not true, but it’s hard to deny. The Raiders need to find their QB of the future, whether it’s through free agency or the 2022 draft, and maximize his trade value and salary cap hit. They have a lot more talent surrounding him this year, but it still feels the same.

    1. Then you must not be paying attention. When he has had the pieces around him he has been successful. He took us to the playoffs in 2016. Not his fault that his leg got broken. Not only are we going to the playoffs this year, but inside 5 years we will have a Superbowl victory, maybe 2. Just a couple more pieces and our personell staying healthy and we will be on top for years to come.

    2. You seem to think that a lame duck coach and the turmoil surrounding that (Bears game) didn’t have any impact on this team. Or the Ruggs situation (Giants game) wouldn’t have impacted them in any way. They are not robots and as much as we’d like to think they can put those situations out of their minds and play the game, human beings are not wired that way. Give em a break!

    1. I love DC the person and I really like him as the QB. The odds of doing much worse at QB by drafting another one is not mathematically in our favor.

DC is no worse than top 15; he is not top 5. His inability at times to look off of his primary WR (pre-snap evaluation) needs to improve considerably, and this may never happen. He has been in the league for 8 yrs. This game against the Giants was on him. He looked exhausted on the sidelines, and he made several poor choices. Hopefully he will bounce back against the chefs. Big DC fan. Hope for the best, but he has to play better before he is considered elite.

  9. Derek Carr is a top-tier quarterback and even if everybody who talks bad about him doesn’t really think much of him. Answer me this question, who out there that we could get would be better than them? And the answer of available quarterbacks is absolutely zero. So you should probably just shut the hell up let the season play out before you make a judgment

  10. He’s a good QB, and definitely has been a good leader. Especially, considering all the turmoil and coaching changes! However, he is not a top tier QB! He is a .500 QB. Agree that a better D would have given us a few more playoff games, but the QB needs to be a top 5 guy to make and win SBs. Unfortunately, that is not what Carr is.

    1. You must be new to the NFL. There are middle of the road QBs that have won Superbowls. Joe Flacco, Jim McMahon, Tannehill (sp), etc. Please do your homework before making these types of comments.

    2. Until he can take the Raiders deep in the playoffs and win that’s when you will know he’s a winner until then he’s average at best needs to win the games he’s supposed to!!!!!!!

  11. Anyone who talks crap about Carr is instantly identifying themselves as someone who doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Instead of blaming the best player on the team, maybe try learning something about football instead of regurgitating nonsensical media analysis by east coasters who trashed Brady out of NE. Idiots.

    1. Agree 100% No Bull! If we had 22 starters with Carr’s talent and dedication . . The Raiders would NEVER loose a game! Screw the GM’s vote . . Carr’s stellar numbers speak for him . . . He’s a winner . . Put more winners around him. That’s the obvious answer!

  12. Heck if Trent Dilfer can win a Superbowl then why can’t Derek Carr…it takes a lot more than 1 player to win games and you also need a good bounce or flag at the right time. He may not be the best at the position but I think he’s good enough to win any game against any team. There…I said it….I’ll wait

  13. Say it again for the people in the back of the room! These Derek Carr haters will say anything to disparage him. 5 different HC’s in 8 years, and still the dude is playing at a high level.

    1. With the turmoil the raiders have been threw in the last few weeks with losing a head coach and number 1 draft pick wide receiver that was coming out and making strides and still be at 5-3 ….most teams would teams would have tanked already….so for you all raider haters ….let the fucking season play out and see where Carr stands…I think what he has been threw ….he’s still holding down the fort….take that Carr hating **** and wolf your **** down your throat and wash it down with a girly beer

  14. Carr is the right guy,he needs players who aren’t partying all night who are able to do there job its a team sport people.Teams that win have work ethic, take care of them selves body mind and spirit and are willing to compete unselfishly, Carr has all of these and so do others on the team but he needs everyone in, not just some to win.

  15. Derek lost the game against the Giants. Nobody else. He was atrocious in that game! What makes it worse, is that game was the best the running game has looked all year. Jacobs looked healthy again.

I fear Derek is too inconsistent, and we all know he gets happy feet when the pocket is collapsing. His biggest issue is inability to make anything happen when he has to leave the pocket. We all know he is athletic, but we also cringe when he is rolling out (how many times has he fumbled at the goal line for touchbacks).

I have said for years, he isn’t the problem, but I don’t think he’s the answer. We never had a Defense, so I couldn’t be sure, but this year our D is good enough that we can’t blame them anymore.

  16. Carr is a better leader than he is a quarterback. As a quarterback, he’s been very good, occasionally brilliant but inconsistent. The same could have been said about Ken Stabler and Jim Plunkett. The difference was that, in the Madden/Flores years, the team would always rise to the occasion and find a way to play better at the other positions if any key starter wasn’t having a good game We didn’t see much of that under the last half dozen coaches.

  17. Stats are important but can be misleading. If we went by stats alone, Jim Plunket would have been run out of town long before he won 2 Super Bowls. When someone is truly the heart and soul of a team, their stats don’t matter as much.

  18. Care can and does play at high level in many games. But he is just too soft. How many times have we seen him slide short of a critical 3rd down conversion, or immediately fold in the pocket when he’s under pressure? Over the last 8 years – too many. He’s been a very good leader, but he is not a Super Bowl winning QB. At some point (soon) we need to draft or find his replacement because we are finally figuring out how to play Def, and our QB can’t single handedly lose games for us, like he did vs NYG.

    1. 100% agree. He slid short near the goal line in the Giants game. I think his brother basically getting hit out of the game, and 2016 ankle are in his head at all times.

    2. 👏👏👏👍he not only slides a yard short of the 1st down virtually every time he scrambles, but he consistently throws short of a 1st down and expects receivers to get the additional yardage after being fully covered when the ball gets there, misses wide open receivers long, short or to the sides and fails to see wide open receivers!! There are not the traits of an elite quarterback and he is not the same since he broke his leg…facts! I can tell you one thing that Mariota filling in for him last December against Miami in an overtime loss showed more of opposite in his only real shot and the team responded to him in a highly favorable way…facts! The guy deserves a chance to prove he can lead and not just on gimmick plays!!!

      1. When it comes to Carr he did get the raiders to the playoffs. But if we’re all raider fans he is the qb this year so be a fan root for Carr and raiders to win and make playoffs everybody going to have there opinion but we all should just want to win if we are a nation show it and come together as a family and just win win win. When it comes to Carr think of all the qb we have had since Gannon. Pretty sad. Let go raiders

        1. We’re all Raider Nation and always want to see our team win, though in reality every team can’t win, so we’re all inclined to be armchair quarterbacks, head coaches and GM’s! I’ve been to the left coast to see the Raiders play twice in Oakland meeting Jack Tatum, George Atkinson, Otis Sistrunk, Tom Flores, Tim Brown and even got drunk with Rod Martin until his brother picked him up because he was too drunk to drive(great guy), have seen them numerous times here on the east coast including being robbed of a game in Baltimore(even the ravens radio show agreed that the Raiders should have won the game, but not the fucking zebras) and this kind of bias and bs against us has gone on forever it seems since the league has had it out for Al all these years and now Chucky is suing their asses and rightfully so( not agreeing with him, but they singled him out, obviously showing bias and leaving the door open for an even bigger payday then his ten million dollar a year Raider contract)! For all the people saying “Derek Haters” this isn’t personal it’s a business like everything else, it’s about what have you done for us lately, not nostalgia, even the players know this. Derek is a good guy and mostly everyone would agree with that, but in my opinion his time to prove himself has passed, no pun intended and as far as your reference to all the quarterbacks we’ve had since Gannon, yes we’ve gone through tons of useless qb’s with the debacle of JaMarcus Russell coming to mind, yet I’m not a fan of Gannon either regardless of his statistics with his 5 yard west coast offense and his public demeaning of yelling at future HOF Tim Brown…Mr. Gannon is not in the HOF and for good reason! Regardless of all of our opinions we all are still supporters of The Raider Nation which is what keeps us going in all these drought years between winning Super Bowls!!!
God Bless Al Davis, God Bless Mark Davis, God Bless The Las Vegas Raiders and God Bless The Raider Nation!!!🙏😎”Just Win Baby!!!!

  19. Yeah RAIDER NATION LET US BE THE EXAMPLE NOT BS PROBLEM Louisana boy says just win at any cost or means like the madden era

Go RAIDERS. Be the worlds best franchise
