Insider Says Frontrunner for the Raiders Quarterback Job isn’t the One Others Have Hinted About

The Raiders don’t know who their starting quarterback is going to be next year, but several prominent insiders have hinted that Gardner Minshew might be in the pole position for the job.

What we know is that there is going to be a competition, and that no one has been crowned the starter, but some seem to believe Minshew has a slight edge going into training camp.

“[Gardner] Minshew, in all likelihood, will be the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback when the season opens in September,” The Athletic‘s Vic Tafur wrote last week.

“O’Connell has earned the right to compete against Minshew, but the Raiders didn’t give Minshew all that money because he has a sweet mustache. And while we’re on it, it’s really $25 million, as it’s hard to see the Raiders being in a position where they would cut him next year and take a $14 million dead salary-cap hit rather than pay him another $10 million.”

On draft day, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport seemed to take a similar position to Tafur, saying it’s “Gardner Minhew Time” in Las Vegas…

Ian Rapoport on Twitter: “Another QB!! The #Broncos, who just traded for Zach Wilson, now take Bo Nix at No. 12. Their QB of the future.Which means the #Raiders are out of first-round QBs. It’s Gardner Minshew time in Las Vegas. / Twitter”

There is one insider voice, however, that seems to be leaning toward Aidan O’Connell as the quarterback to beat for the job.

“I’m telling you what the people inside are telling me. It is Aiden’s [job to lose],” Hondo Carpenter said this week on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “He’s going to have to hold it. Everyone’s going to get a chance to compete, and we’ll see what happens.”

Who the coaching staff might be leaning toward at QB1 in 2024 isn’t necessarily a huge story considering there is expected to be a competition for the job, but it will be interesting to see who gets the first-team reps in training camp or if the quarterbacks will split reps evenly at the start.

One advantage O’Connell might have on Minshew is his relationship with head coach Antonio Pierce, but both quarterbacks will be learning a new system under offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. O’Connell won’t have any advantage on Minshew in terms of familiarity with the scheme.

As for Minshew, he is more experienced than O’Connell and has quietly put together a five-year NFL career that has been more productive than the highly touted no. 1 pick of the 2021 draft.

But could Minshew have already peaked as a player, and will there be curiosity from the coaching staff to see what O’Connell can development into in his second year?

Answers are coming soon, and in the meantime, it looks like the fan base is as split as anyone one the decision…

  1. May the better man win. I believe AOC is the better passer but GM is more mobile. I do think that AOC has more upside. I also like the fact that they gave him #12.

  2. adien had his shot. time to give a real QB the tools to succeed period . gardener is the guy . trade aiden get some money or something for him he was horrible last year . the raidewrs do this every year they fall short on the talent . they should have gone for a ffraNCHISE QB THEY DID not they squandered another draft . its very hard to be a raider fan these days. after gruden dumped mack its been downhill every since. you have the best wr in the game in adamas and cant get him the ball. then you drop the best running back in the game or top 5 in jacobs after all he’s running behind the worst line ever and did what he did . its silly that a person l;like me who is uneducated at best knows this and the folks being paid millions cant figure it out
