Top Cornerback Says the Raiders Told Him They Almost Drafted Him with the 13th-Overall Pick

Prior to the draft, there was a lot of buzz around the Raiders potentially taking a cornerback in the first round, and the name most connected to the team in that position was Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold.

Arnold was considered a good fit for the Raiders in terms of his position and skill set, and everyone assumed he would be a good personality fit with head coach Antonio Pierce.

In the end, it sounds like the Raiders almost drafted Arnold with the 13th-overall pick, or at least that’s what they told him on the phone after the draft.

“The Raiders coach, they called me after the draft, and they were like ‘We actually had a coin toss between you and Brock Bowers [and] it landed on him,'” said in an appearance on The Next Round.

Presumably, the Raiders didn’t involve an actual “coin toss” in their decision to draft Bowers, but it does sound like Arnold might have been the pick if the Georgia tight end wasn’t on the board. The majority of mock drafts had Arnold being taken in the first 15 picks, so the Lions caught a break when he fell to pick 24.

As for the Raiders and their coaching staff, it speaks highly of Pierce (assuming that is the coach who called) that he reached out to Arnold after the draft and let him know he was almost taken much earlier.

After passing on Arnold, the Raiders went on to take two cornerbacks in the draft. They spent a fourth-round pick on Mississippi State cornerback Decamerion Richardson and a seventh-round pick on Pittsburgh cornerback MJ Devonshire.

  1. I don’t even understand the purpose of a call like this?? Sure doesn’t seem very professional. A call like this serves no purpose for either party. If I were Terrion, I would let it rest.
