Insider Shifts Draft Projection for Shedeur Sanders and the Raiders at Pick 6

Could Shedeur Sanders end up going to the Raiders with the no. 6 pick in the draft?

There are some who think the Raiders would take Shedeur if he’s on the board with the sixth pick, and some like Vinny Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal who have been endorsing the idea of the Raiders taking the Colorado quarterback for the last few months.

Two months ago, Bonsignore said he thought the Raiders might have an opportunity to get Shedeur and was enthusiastic about the idea of the team taking him with the sixth pick.

“I have a feeling that this might be the Raiders fortunate draft; [their] lucky day where you don’t have to trade up and you don’t have to mortgage your future,” Bonsignore said on Raider Nation Radio’s Morning Tailgate in February.

“The way things are kind of lining up with some dominant players at the top of the draft this year, the generational players that the Tennessee Titans new general manager doesn’t want to pass up on. I think there’s an actual chance that Shedeur Sanders is going to drop to no. 6 and the Raiders are going to stand pat and wait for Shedeur Sanders, the great young quarterback from the University of Colorado to fall to them.”

Since February, though, the Raiders sent a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Geno Smith and Bonsignore’s projection on the pick has changed.

This week on the same flagship radio show, Bonsignore said he still believes Shedeur will be on the board with the sixth pick but believes the Raiders will pass on him if that scenario plays out.

“I feel like in spite of what’s going on with the Giants and bringing in Shedeur Sanders or heading over to Colorado to work him out for a private visit with a contingency of Giants decision makers, I don’t think that they draft him with the third pick,” Bonsignore said on the Morning Tailgate. “I do think he’s going to be available at no. 6, and I think the Raiders are going to have a decision on their hands. I don’t think that they go Shedeur in that scenario.”

Considering the position Bonsignore has taken on Shedeur, his latest comments shouldn’t be glazed over. If Bonsignore doesn’t think the Raiders will take Shedeur at no. 6, it stands to reason that he is getting information that the team isn’t particularly enamored with him.

Even with a veteran quarterback in the mix, if the Raiders believe Shedeur is going to be an elite quarterback, or even a top 10 quarterback, they would presumably take him with the no. 6 pick.

What seems to be happening, for a variety of reasons, is that teams are shying away from Sanders and the majority of media personalities around the league are starting to buy in to the idea that he isn’t going to be drafted as early as what’s been projected.

There’s a reason Shedeur won’t be attending the draft and, most likely, it’s because he understands where he’ll probably be going in the draft.

Bonsignore’s guest on Tuesday’s show was Yahoo and FOX Sports host Jason Fitz, and he offered a similar sentiment on Shedeur’s draft stock and his impending visit with the New York Giants.

“Let me also just double down on what you just said,” Fitz said.

“We’ve literally just finished taping insight coverage for Yahoo Sports, and I asked all of our people, what do we make of the Giants at [pick] 3? The answer I got from every one of our insiders was the same. It’s just leverage to try and get somebody to move up in a trade. There are people now that think that the Saints might be willing to overpay to move up, and that becomes part of the conversation. So I agree with you. I think this is all just noise.”

Ultimately, the presence of Deion Sanders is probably the dynamic that has hurt Shedeur the most in terms of his draft stock.

There are more than a few NFL organizations that aren’t interested in dealing with the noise and potential scrutiny that would inevitably come with the elder Sanders in the background.

And if things don’t go well right away for Shedeur in the NFL, who’s betting against ‘Coach Prime’ angling to get a foot in the door and trying to push a head coach and/or GM out the door?

  1. Picking SS would be the Move that DOES mortgage the future of the Raiders. On top of that Little Baby SHE-don’er’s Extremely Large Baggage (Prime) has decided that he does not want his Baby Boy to go through the Humiliation of a Possible Slide in the Upcoming Draft and is Not going to attend an Event that Most kids would give their ***** to be in a Once in a Lifetime position like this. Truth is, unless the NYG are dumb enough to take SS at 3 (and they ARE Stupid) then the refusal to attend the draft will become a self fulfilling prophecy about sliding down. Perhaps if Daddy would let his Son Grow Up and become his own man?
