Jaguars GM Pays Raiders GM John Spytek Big Compliment Following Jakobi Meyers Trade

The Raiders managed to pull off a trade Jakobi Meyers on Tuesday and based on reports leading up to the trade deadline, they got the deal they were looking for.

An ESPN report last week said the Raiders were looking for a Day 2 draft pick in exchange for Meyers, and while they didn’t get a Day 2 pick, they did get the value of a Day 2 pick.

The Jaguars had not been linked to Meyers prior to a Mike Silver report on Monday, and it sounds like the deal came together quickly in the 48 hours leading up to the trade deadline.

According to Jaguars GM James Gladstone, who talked to the Florida Times-Union on Wednesday, the Raiders played their hand well on Meyers and the Jaguars didn’t get the impression Spytek was in any hurry to get a deal done.

“Gladstone… called Raiders general manager John Spytek last week to ask about Meyers. Meyers had told the Raiders he wanted to be traded,” Jags insider Ryan O’Halloran reported.

“‘It didn’t seem like they were really interested in doing anything,’ Gladstone [told O’Halloran]. ‘And then post-game (after the Jaguars’ win), I checked in with John to see if anything had changed based off where they were at from a record standpoint (2-6). They held firm on their stance and what they wanted. We were ultimately able to come to a spot where we were able to make an offer.’”

Assuming a third-round pick was the least the Raiders were willing to take for Meyers, a fourth and sixth-round pick wasn’t necessarily a concession. As ESPN’s Mina Kimes pointed out this week, the value of the two picks amounts to the value of a late third-round pick.

From the Raiders’ standpoint, it sounds like Spytek played his cards well and didn’t panic on Meyers.

Had Spytek not been able to trade Meyers, he probably would not have received a compensatory pick (Q Myers explained that detail on Monday), so the rookie GM did well to convince the league his no. 1 wide receiver was for sale but wasn’t on sale.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what the Raiders do without Meyers in the lineup.

Meyers was the Raiders’ no. 1 wide receiver, and the rookie receivers drafted by Spytek in April have not shown a lot in the first half of the season.

Second-round pick Jack Bech is expected to fill most of the void left by Meyers, and fourth-round pick Dont’e Thornton Jr. will figure in somewhere but was on the inactive list for the first time all season in week 9 versus the Jaguars.

  1. Oh yes, the budget friendly “Mr. Coupon himself,” John Spytek is making trades for the future for which he may not be here. Why were GM’s: Tom Telesco and Dave Zigler given only two years? They got two short years because they passed on the great Quarterbacks who were within their reach that have turned around the teams they are now on. John Spytek has only one hope of getting a third year, he is going to have to draft and hit on Quarterback. If he does not do this he will join GM’s: Telsco, Ziegler, Maycok and McKenzie who all got kicked to the curbside, by the genius himself Mark Davis. The Raiders are trying to play the Oakland A’s money ball in a town where they are now turning a profit. If the Raiders hope to ever win again we must get back to biding on top tier A free agents and drafting impact players in what has become a passing league. Drafting projects and trying to save Mark money is a quick way out of here. Mark is not smart but he is very generous, our lack of success is not because Davis is tight fisted or greedy. He will spend what it takes to win so get busy or your saving money for our next GM.

    1. Even though the draft was absolutely terrible and the FAs decisions were terrible and the coaches hired were terrible and the trades that have been pulled off have been terrible Spytek probably isn’t worried too much about it since it’s his old buddy that gave him the job and it’s that same good old teammate that made those calls. Between fake owner/football decision maker Tom Brady dumb decisions and Pete only banging the table for people he’s coached b4 Spytek is the least of the problems. This was a disaster from the words discounted ownership shares.
