James Jones Talks On Why the Raiders’ Offense Has Been Struggling

The Raiders haven’t met expectations on offense in the first month of the season, and there are a lot of theories swirling around why that’s been the case.

Former Raiders’ wide receiver James Jones talked about the offense last week, and he believes the coaching staff needs to settle on an identity.

“I don’t think [the Raiders have an identity] yet, and I think that’s why we kind of see us struggling with the turnovers,” Jones said on the Upon Further Review podcast.

“Do we want to be a team that’s running the ball downhill, that’s giving our running backs 25 to 30 touches a game? Or do we want to spread this out and be able to get this ball to Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers and all those guys, Tre Tucker, do we want to be an offense like that? So, I think we have to go back to the drawing board and we really got to do some self scouting, some self evaluation and really figure out what we want to be on offense, and whatever we want to be on offense, I think we have to stick with that.”

One of the reasons the offense might be struggling to find an identity right now is because of the variety of personalities involved in creating the offense.

Chip Kelly is the offensive coordinator, but Tom Brady has also been influential in game planning, according to reports following the Raiders’ week 2 game against the Chargers.

Members of the organization have denied Brady’s involvement, but it would be naive to believe Brady hasn’t incorporated himself into every aspect of football operations.

Last week, the offense looked better aside from a few interceptions from Geno Smith, so it will be interesting to see if they can build on that momentum with Kolton Miller and potentially Brock Bowers out of the lineup on Sunday against the Colts.

  1. They need to end the Geno Smith era, another horrible pick in the red zone. He is single-handedly destroying the Raiders. They need to make a change at halftime.

  2. Why the f**k is Smith still in there. Myers 11yds, I guess the coaching staff hopes he has a bad year so we get nothing in return when he leaves. This is the worst Ive seen the Raiders in a while. Seattle knew what they were doing firing Carroll then getting a third for Smith and Raider management were thinking we got a good deal.

    1. Because the Raiders gave up a Day 2 pick for this 35 year old QB, Carroll has said he didn’t want anyone else, and Brady was supposedly a big voice in their lack of interest in Darnold…

Never doubt the strength of will that rich, powerful people have to refuse annoying a mistake. Also, why should Pickett have to clean up this turd? The time to make the move was halftime, not when Indy was winning 40-3. Maybe this week, though. Geno is broken, and I don’t think he can be fixed.

  3. I just can’t imagine why a 75 year old coaching lifer as decorated as Pete Carroll would allow some dilletante like Brady get involved in game planning? Why would he sign up for that? And if Brady is as involved as it seems, boy is he doing a bad job.

I don’t think Kelly has some a good job, but Geno has just been atrocious. I’m watching the Mexican broadcast, and they’ve highlighted a number of times Geno has had wide open receivers and made terrible decisions. It all goes back to being all-in on Geno. The 3rd rounder to get him. Then they didn’t draft a QB until the 6th round, and the guy doesn’t make the team. AOC gets hurt and they choose to give up a legitimate pick for Kenny Pickett, who is basically AOC with a better draft pedigree. You can argue if Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold or any of the other available QBs would be any good in this environment, but I don’t think there is any arguing that the Raiders completely bungled the QB situation this offseason.

  4. This offseason was a TOTAL disaster! Nothing was done to improve this train wreck of an organization. Giving Brady total control, hiring Carroll, trading for Geno, the draft class, it’s been an underwhelming body of work. Funny, going into the game I was worried that it would be a blowout and, dang, it was! The ONLY fix is new ownership.

  5. In four short weeks Carroll has wrecked Bowers our best offensive player and ruined Myers our second best offensive player. I don’t remember a beat down like this in a long time. Changes need to be made, we are probably the worst team in the league right now.

  6. It’s the f’n front line, the qb, and the offensive coordinator, gino smith. Mainly the coaches love for gino smith. Get rid of the whole coaching staff.
