Jon Gruden Is Looking For A Backup QB, Should He Call Colin Kaepernick?

The Raiders backup quarterback battle was supposed to be a good one to watch, but so far it’s been one of the disappointing stories of the preseason. Between E.J. Manuel and Connor Cook, it’s hard to know which has been worse (though Cook has probably been a little more painful to watch).

Jon Gruden wasn’t shy about his intentions after Friday’s game and he undoubtedly spent some of his weekend combing through a Rolodex of free agent quarterbacks. Which begs the question… would the Raiders be better served at quarterback by signing Colin Kaepernick and cutting bait with Cook and Manuel?

The NFL would probably like to see it happen to potentially end Kaepernick’s collusion case against them and Marshawn Lynch already plants his bottom on the bench for every singing of the national anthem, anyway. What’s the worst that could happen if someone was sitting or kneeling next to him?

Whatever the case, The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II doesn’t think it will happen and took a shot at owner Mark Davis for not already making it happen.

“The old Raiders would have delighted in signing Colin Kaepernick,” Thompson wrote on Sunday in The Athletic. “But these newly gentrified Raiders have just fallen in line. They light the torch in honor of the memory of Al Davis, the captain of rebels, and keep ‘The Autumn Wind’ in the rotation like a Drake single on local radio. But when it comes to Kaepernick, they aren’t pirates.”

Form your own opinions on all that, but what won’t be cool is if Carr has the misfortune of missing time again and the Raiders field another incompetent backup – and by the way things look right now, that would probably be the case.

  1. Hell yeah kaepernick would be a great backup. Gruden would be doing the NFL a favor and they sure need one

  2. Nice try by this Thompson guy trying to intimidate Gruden and the Raiders into doing something stupid so as not to appear conventional. While it’s true that Al Davis occasionally brought in players that were given up for dead by other teams, he wouldn’t sign a player solely because he made himself a piranha to half of the football audience unless he had the goods.

  3. I felt awful regarding our backup QBs right after the preseason game against the Packers, but watching it again, Connor Cook, though not picture perfect, wasn’t that bad when playing with our first team OL. Maybe he is the kind of player who can manage the game with good supporting cast. With Kaepernick being effective only under system tailor made for him, I’ll rather keep Cook for now.

  4. The Raiders don’t need a piece of **** traitor that sucks worse at football and has never done jackshit in the sport.

    1. A traitor? I dont think he spilled any state or military secrets to Russia. He took a knee in protest to something that meant enough to him as a man to lose everything. You are dumb. Nuff said.

    2. How is he a traitor you moron, did he he collude with Russia and putin. There is your traitor

  5. Colin Kaepernick was the top quarterback on the Raiders draft board in 2011. They wanted to draft him very badly according to Perter King. Hue Jackson erstwhile head coach of the Raiders stated, “I think about it all the time, believe me. No question in my mind we wanted it to happen, and no question I thought it could happen. We [Al Davis and Hue] wanted the kid in the worst way.”

We know what Davis wanted to do then – all true Raiders know that a guy who threw 16 TD passes to 4 interception with a 59% completion rate on a terrible 49ers team with zero weapons would have been in Napa this summer. Marshawn sits for the anthem. Kap kneels. We know Al would have Kap as one of the 53. Full Stop.

  6. The difference between Marshawn and Kaep is that Marshawn gives the media absolutely nothing to work with so it keeps them at a stalemate. He is the type of guy that believes actions speak louder then words with his constant charities helping out local youth that need it! Free haircuts if you bring in your good report card from school Beastmode set up last year…that just one of the hundreds of things he has done that goes unnoticed. He doesn’t bring in a media circus because he knows how twisted words can become. I just think the raiders do not need any distractions right now after last year’s rumor mill that was created after the redskins prime time shellacking of us. Bringing Kaep in will just bring the bad media in looking for any garbage they can create out of it. By the way…doesn’t everyone remember the stories of Kaep taking out water boys and trainers with errant passes at 49er practice? The sitting by himself with his headphones on in the team’s lunch room. Does that sound like a good teammate? I just feel like everyone forgets how awful he was as a player because of the kneeling issue. I remember Hue Jax loved him out of college and he won’t even touch him now.

  7. No no and no. No more loud mouth punks are needed on this team. There’s a reason why no one wants his sorry ***.

  8. Cap went to the supper bowl where has your QB taken you he’s better than the one you have starting now

  9. Cap went to the supper bowl where has your QB taken you he’s better than the one you have starting now

  10. No. He’s not a fit. He’s not a “pocket-passer” and never will be. His envolvement in social injustice isn’t the issue.

  11. You sign a backup that can fit your scheme and be an asset in the QB room. Kaep checks neither of those boxes.

  12. If they sign that piece of **** I won’t watch again this year. I love the Raiders but I loathe this douchenozzle. There are other guys out there I would rather see than this touch hole! Anyone that disrespects our military, law enforcement and first responders should just take a long walk off a short cliff! Your logic is flaw Colon Crapondick! More whites are killed by cops than blacks. I don’t hear any outrage from you on that one do I? You should be taking a knee when Rahm Emmanuel gets up and runs his cocktrap. Chicago is a killing field and there is no end in sight. But he is worried about everything but that! Where is your outrage on that? I’m not saying all cops are good! But 99.9% are !

  13. Deacon sounds like your M_m your talking about that’s pretty disrespectful & untrue since she never made it to a super bowl & played great. People like you should never be a part of Raider Nation prob a coward in person!

  16. They had better do something. With Kolten Miller likely to be taken to school by a host of all pro pass rushers until he learns, and Penn struggling on the right side, Carr will be under siege until the tackles settle in to their roles. An injury for # 4 could be imminent. With Cook & Manuel battling to see who can be the worst backup QB in the NFL, the prognosis isn’t good. Rather it’s Kaepernick or somebody else, they need to kick the tires on any QB they can find. Either that or Mark needs to make a deal with the devil to keep Carr upright.

  17. Josh McGowan will be available from the Jets soon. He’d be a good reliable backup this year!
