Within the next month or so, the Raiders are going to be hiring a full-time GM and head coach.
They also might be interviewing for another position.
Speaking this week to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, Raiders owner Mark Davis talked about creating a position for a “great football mind” to work with his new GM and head coach…
“That’s a missing piece to the puzzle, so to speak, is a solid football mind that isn’t the GM or the head coach. And I think that’s a piece that’s probably going to be necessary somewhere down the line is bringing in somebody that understands that football that’s above the day-to-day work.”
Normally, a GM is hired to be the “great football mind” of an organization, but Davis seems to have a different twist in mind for the Raiders going forward.
If interim GM Champ Kelly is ultimately hired, it sounds like an additional “football mind” could be a part of the Raiders’ power structure sooner than later.
Davis was asked about when he realized there might be a need for this new position, and he pointed to his first experience with a rookie GM in the saddle…
“It’s something that I learned over time, but it is something that I recognized immediately as well. I mean, if you think about it, when my dad passed away, there wasn’t a general manager on the team, so to speak. And the first person I hired was Reggie McKenzie as a GM to put somebody that’s had 17 years of experience in player personnel in charge of that. Now, he was a rookie GM, but he had the experience for many, many years in an organization (the Green Bay Packers) that was very good at player personnel. So, I knew to get that. I think with Reggie and I, where the issue with the situation was is Reggie hired a rookie head coach (Dennis Allen). So, I had a rookie GM and a rookie head coach. We didn’t have a great football mind in the building to help them. That’s something I’ve learned throughout the process.”
Just a thought here…
Does this sound like a position Davis might be thinking about for Tom Brady?

Is this how Gruden comes back
SCREW TOM BRADY..JUST BECAUSE HE CAN THROW A BALL DOESNT MEAN HE WOULD BE GOOD IN MANAGEMENT..THE PATRIOTS SCREWED US ONCE IN THE TUCK RULE GAME.LETS NOT LET BRADY SCREW US AGAIN.IM SORRY BUT TO ME HES LIKE THE ENEMY IN THE WINGS
I don’t think I’m the only die hard Raider fan who absolutely does not want Tom Brady to be a part of ANYTHING we do! Also, who wants any more association with Josh McDaniels? We haven’t had a bigger ‘cancer’ in our locker room since JaMarcus Russell! Tom Brady can take his tuck rule *** back to Gillette stadium; along with McDaniels, Gronkowski and any other Raider haters that have spilled over to the West Coast! Brady might have a great football mind but wait until all those concussions catch up to him… we’ll see how sharpe he is then! I love you, Nation!! Hey Tom, it was a fumble!
Hey Nation, guys, gals, well you know for sure he is talking about Brady!! His mind is as good as it gets for football. Of course he can get an older guy too. His father had all the old Raiders hanging around to pick their minds any time. I see Mark hanging with Charles Woodson and a few other old Raiders so he keeps guys around also!! I hope they are in his ear about the next new coach as well. I definitely believe we need a culture change!!
Sounds like AP and Champ just mine have those feet in the door if they keep up the good work!
I completely agree with Mark on this. If he’s going to keep A.P. and Champ Kelly, (which I think he should) he needs to hire someone with head coaching experience, like Frank Reich, Herm Edwards, or Todd Haley as a senior offensive assistant to help A.P. with game time organization…clock management, challenges etc. Hiring Rich Gannon as Q.B. coach would also be a good move. The core pieces, roster wise, are in place. Having Brady in the building as so.e sort of front office mgmt/brain trust would be a great move as well.
Or Jon Gruden?
