Antonio Pierce is making a strong case to be named the Raiders’ next head coach, and The Athletic’s Vic Tafur thinks there is an opportunity coming on December 25 for the interim head coach to seize the job before the season ends.
During an appearance on the JT The Brick Show on Friday, Tafur said he believes the upcoming game against the Chiefs could seal the decision for Raiders owner Mark Davis…
“Last night was big for [Antonio Pierce]. It was a national TV statement. They dominated and you saw Mark Davis having a ball up in the box. He was laughing and drinking 10 waters and covering his eyes. He couldn’t believe what he was watching. So it was definitely a huge statement game for Antonio.
Now they’ve got three games left and he’s talked about the Chiefs, and they had them on the ropes last time and back in KC last year. If they can beat the Chiefs somehow, I think he’s got it. You can’t announce it officially because you have to go through the process in the offseason. But if [Pierce] beats the Chiefs, he’s the guy.”
With the Chiefs game being played on Christmas Day, the Raiders have 10 days to prepare for what will be the biggest game of Pierce’s coaching career.
The Chiefs have lost 3 of their last 4 games and their only win in that stretch came against the Raiders. Patrick Mahomes is having the worst season of his NFL career and the Chiefs’ offense hasn’t been nearly as explosive with its pedestrian wide receiver group.
Playoffs or no playoffs, it would be a nice bookend to the season to beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead, where the Raiders haven’t won since 2020. Overall, the Raiders are 3-17 against the Chiefs in their last 20 games played.
