Packers OLB Coach Mike Smith doesn’t coach Maxx Crosby, but he shared strong words on the Raiders’ young pass rusher this week after learning that Crosby had been voted to the Pro Bowl.
Smith led into his rant by pointing out that too many people tend to overemphasize sack totals.
“It’s ridiculous. It couldn’t get me any more ticked off when I see it,” Smith said of those who only look at sack totals to evaluate a player.
“That’s why when I saw that Maxx Crosby is going [to the Pro Bowl]. Fired up. That kid is a hell of a rusher. He’s got five sacks this year. Well put his tape on and he’s affecting the quarterback. He’s got a high motor, he doesn’t stop, he does his job. Those are the guys that deserve it. Who cares about that sack mess. I couldn’t be more fired up when I saw that he got it because I’ve been admiring that kid all this year. He plays the game the way it should be played.”
One media outlet that hasn’t overlooked Crosby this year is Pro Football Focus, who has Crosby as their second-highest graded edge rusher on the season with at least 200 defensive snaps. Only Cleveland’s Myles Garrett has a higher grade.
For what it’s worth, Crosby is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2022 season. His contract can be extended after the season and the Raiders would be wise to pay the ‘Condor’ before his sack totals inevitably go up.

Disruption is the name of the game on the D Line. Maxx is involved in most of the Raiders biggest plays, been saying this all along, couldn’t agree more. The sacks will come, meantime opposing O Lines will have to use extra resources to contain him

I agree that Crosby has high motor. Id be interested to see what percentage of his high QB pressures result in stops, negative yards, or positive plays for the offense. If majority of pressures only lead to QB stepping up or rolling out n completing play for positive yds then pressures become a littles less impressive.
Let me explain as using say Khalil Mack. The highest amount of tackles in one game for Crosby this season is 4. Mack who is done for season n was playing hurt through majority of games he did play this season but Mack has more sacks n most tackles in a game this season by Mack is 8 against Raiders. I only say this because if Crosby is only geared up to get after QB n isnt adjusting by breaking off n tackling or turning plays into his fellow defenders it also makes his pressures n grades little less impressive.
I think people fail to realize the kind of numbers Mack produced while wearing silver n black. His tackle totals at least doubled that of which Crosby produces with outstanding sack totals. Mack made a lot of non-sack plays n saved many games single-handedly throughout his time with team.
I agree with Packers coach in that sack totals can be deceiving and too many people focus on that total only. I believe a factor should be how the lineman creates better playing from other teammates n what percentage of plays said lineman is doubled team.
All you have to do is watch Raiders games. It becomes apparent quickly.
Close but the fact that Mack is a linebacker puts him in different positions than Maxx. You sound alittle disgruntled still bout letting Mack get away to the Bears. But yeah Mack is a beast. Just a different position playing beast.
Agree Crosby has been on fire this year.
Max is my favorite Raider, he plays like Howie, Howie didn’t have high sack numbers. Mainly because he would be double teamed and Pickel would get the sacks.

AL Davis has made more bad trades, bad draft picks, and bad free agent signings then anybody in silver and black. He doesnt get a pass for early success.

It will be great to have Derek Carr move to a better team with better owners and better coaches. John Gruden had Mark Davis completely mesmerized and after four years, managed to ruin what was left of the Raiders. Mark Davis is not the man his father was and that will always be a problem for the Raiders. Many teams in the NFL would love to get Carr and move him into their better managed and coached teams. With Mark Davis, the Raiders are dead fish.
