Raiders Beat Writer Shares His “Trepidation” with Tyree Wilson

Expectations might not be incredibly high for Tyree Wilson in his second NFL season, but the hope is that he can fulfil a meaningful role for the Raiders this year after an offseason that showed signs of progress.

Going back to last year, the message around Wilson was always that 2024 should be treated like his rookie season. He was considered a developmental pick out of college, and a significant foot injury all but wiped out his first NFL offseason.

So far, though, Wilson has failed to make an impression on the majority of media members covering training camp and the preseason.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal‘s Vinny Bonsignore has been following Wilson since the day he was drafted, and Bonsignore shared his biggest concern with the former seventh-overall pick on the radio last week.

“At this point in his rookie year, Maxx Crosby had already shown like ‘Oh… who’s the fourth-round pick from Eastern Michigan?” Bonsignore said on Raider Nation Radio’s Morning Tailgate.

“By this time, we could [say], ‘Okay, alright. This is a player to keep an eye on.’ My problem and my trepidation about Tyree is that he’s not shown that. We’ll give him the mulligan last year and for good reason. [He’s] now in his second season, first full training camp, [we] just haven’t seen it. Whether it’s practice, whether it’s games. You don’t feel Tyree out there. He doesn’t make his presence felt.”

It would be interesting to know how the coaching staff really feels about Wilson and it’s worth noting that the current General Manager in the Raiders building didn’t draft him. The team will be patient with Wilson, but not as patient as they would have been with former GM Dave Ziegler in the building.

Wilson was held out of the Raiders’ third preseason game, and was given below-average grades in both preseason games he played in. In those two games, Pro Football Focus credited Wilson with two pressures on 48 defensive snaps, 27 of which were pass plays.

  1. How could any team be this bad at drafting over the last quarter century…seriously? It’s been bust after bust after bust. I truly hope Tyree comes around but I’ve seen this movie before.

    1. There is no “there” there with Tyree, unfortunately. OK, he gets a pass for last year due to injury. But he’s healthy this year and he comes into this year having vastly more experience than any rookie. The one area he HAD to show improvement in was his get off quickness. But he’s still the last guy off the ball on every play. He’s a bust. He doesn’t have the intangibles that one cannot acquire. A player can get stronger in the weight room. A player can gain skills by watching film, picking the brains of team mates and coaches or going to Vaughn Miller’s camp, etc. What he can’t gain are speed, quickness and agility. Tyree possesses none of these attributes. He will never live up to being a number 7 over all pick. Not his fault he was over drafted. But that’s the way I see it. Better to cut bait and sign Koonce to a long term deal.

    2. Can argue with you. Why draft him last year instead of trading down or up. I like the TE this year but why? What about a CB? How did we not draft that kid the pats drafted in the 6th? Raiders are trying to be too creative or smart with each pick and end up out smarting themselves.

  2. he was overdrafted ala Clelin Farrell. The last 3 raiders GM’s should be stocking shelves at Walmart not working in the NFL. Ziegler looked ok bc Reggie and Gruden/Mayock were so bad

  3. This one is on Graham I think. Wilson is not a good fit for the 4-3. He should be playing in a 3-4. When Graham is fired or is allowed to walk at the end of the season, the drafting of Tyree Wilson will be cited as a big reason why.

  4. I agree with Ty and Tito and put up or shut up time starts in two weeks and then we will see. On a separate note, “someone” NEEDS to kick Tyree Wilson in the *** and get him jump started. I believe that this single move could be a serious difference maker between a so-so and an exemplary season for the Raiders. I believe that Antonio Pierce needs to pull a Bill Parcels on Tyree Wilson. If any of you are old enough to remember, when he was in New England, Bill Parcels called Terry Glenn, “Miss Glenn,” and Terry Glenn responded with a 92 reception season. After the season was over, Coach Parcels was asked about his “Miss Glenn” comment, in reference to Terry Glenn, at the beginning of the season, and Coach Parcels responded, “…if he has 92 catches next year, we’re going to call him Miss America.” In my opinion, Coach Pierce needs to challenge Tyree Wilson similarly.
