Raiders Hoping To Sign Jordy Nelson, Cut Michael Crabtree?

According to multiple reports, the Raiders are meeting with free agent wide receiver Jordy Nelson on Wednesday in Oakland.

The Raiders are said to have strong interest in Nelson and according to Michael Gehlkin of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders would likely release Michael Crabtree if Nelson is signed.

If true, it says a lot about the way the organization feels about Nelson, but it also gives a good indication of how unsettled the Raiders are with Crabtree, who is about three years younger than Nelson.

Whether it’s related to the cost of keeping Crabtree or more to do with his attitude, the Raiders seem willing to dump Crabtree as soon as they have a reasonable alternative.

The Patriots are also said to be interested in Nelson, but if the Raiders are willing to cut Crabtree, it seems there would be a full-time role offered to Nelson in Oakland – something the Patriots presumably would not be willing to offer.

Connecting the dots a little on this one, there’s a good chance the Raiders and Nelson get a deal done.

If that happens and considering the cost of receivers lately, maybe the Raiders could find a trade of some kind for Crabtree?

  1. Crabtree would be signed by NE almost instantly if that all went down.
But, yeah, Jordy Nelson has great hands and is a consummate professional, unlike that jackass crabtree

  2. Nelson doesn’t replace Crabtree. Crabtree is great for 1st downs and especially red zone. For that alone he’s worth 7 million. Especially when Sammy Watkins just got 16 million per year.

  3. Why would they drop Crabtree? Makes no sense. Compared to other free agents, he’s cheap at 7mil. Nelson is older and is a good slot receiver. Huge upgrade over Seth Roberts……Roberts is expandable. If Crab wants more money, then perhaps it makes sense to release him, otherwise why not have Cooper Crabtree and Nelson and Jared Cook?

  4. This is ridiculous! I cannot believe that Gruden and McKenzie are collectively stupid enough to cut a gifted receiver like Michael Crabtree who’s led the team in every category of receiving since his arrival 3 years ago while assembling a long and impressive highlight reel of acrobatic clutch catches and game winning touchdown grabs on impossible fade patterns for $7 million in cap space when the cost of legitimate #1 receivers has skyrocketed to the mid teens!

While I’d love to have Jordy Nelson on the team, if anything, his signing should result in the release of Seth Roberts as the former has clearly lost a step and is therefore no longer a viable option as a post receiver. He would however thrive in Robert’s slot role. Crabtree is easily the single most underrated wide receiver in the league and currently an enormous bargain at just $7 million a year! It makes absolutely no sense to let him go and would prove in short order to be a colossally irresponsible management decision with far reaching negative implications!

    This had better not happen!

  5. Really ?!? Crabtree is staying……If Jordy signs on bye bye to Seth Roberts…..What really gets my goat is all these FA’s linked to the Raiders somehow, with B.S. sources (most likely money hungry agents) reported by so called insiders…….more like click baiters……

  6. If he is signed, then I think it is for camp competition to get Seth Roberts to improve. He could also be replacing Seth.

  7. Good post. I learn something tougher on different blogs everyday. It’ll at all times be stimulating to learn content from other writers and observe somewhat one thing from their store. I’d choose to use some with the content on my blog whether or not you don’t mind. Natually I’ll offer you a link in your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
