According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Shedeur Sanders is likely to slide past the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders tonight and might still be on the board in the third round.
Schefter said “not a lot of teams” are interested in drafting Shedeur, and at least one beat writer covering the Raiders dropped a hint on Friday that the Colorado quarterback probably won’t be wearing Silver & Black after the second round, either.
But there is one NFL insider who thinks Shedeur could end up going to the Raiders.
“I would say the closest and most realistic landing spot for Shedeur Sanders is the Las Vegas Raiders,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Friday.
“They have Geno Smith as their starter, just signed a new contract so he’s locked in for a couple years, but he is a veteran, he is a good guy that would potentially be a mentor to Shedeur. So that is one spot [for Shedeur]. If not there, it might actually be the third round to the Steelers.”
For all the talk about the quarterbacks and where they stand on the different draft boards, there’s a chance Shedeur doesn’t even have a second-round grade from a lot of teams.
It’s widely believed that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is a fan of Sanders and if Pittsburgh is the team that ultimately takes Shedeur in the third round, that would be an incredible value compared to where most mock drafts have been sending him for the last few months.
From a talent standpoint, Shedeur has the tools to be one of the better starting quarterbacks in the NFL, but a lot of teams obviously don’t feel they are equipped to handle the family dynamic that would come with Shedeur.
Tomlin is one of a handful of coaches that can probably manage the expectations that Deion will have for his son and if Tomlin can’t, it will certainly be entertaining watching him try.
